#European 🇪🇺. ( #Austrian 🇦🇹 in #Switzerland🇨🇭.) Interested in almost all things international. Posting, i.a., photos of my train trips, past & present.
Fighting yet another heatwave requires some imagination for those, like us, without air-condition. I give it a try with this picture taken in January 2011. This is a narrow-gauge Chemin de Fer du #Jura🇨🇭#CJ push-pull unit, photographed at Pré-Petitjean on the Jura heights at about 1,000 metres a.s.l.
This is a #Vienna 🇦🇹 Type E tramcar, displaying their classical red and white livery. The destination board reads #Baščaršija, which means we weren’t quite in Vienna when I took this photo one morning in September 2008. This is #Sarajevo 🇧🇦. The tram works the loop around the “Bazaar” in the old town.
What a beauty: a late-blooming rosebush in our neighbourhood. A surprising sight, given the drought and yet another heatwave. 🌹 🙏
The westbound #Amtrak 🇺🇸 “Southwest Chief” makes an early morning stop at #Barstow, CA. On the left, the station’s “Harvey House” can be seen. The train, with destination Los Angeles, is hauled by a pair of GE P42DC Genesis units. On the adjacent track, there’s a #BNSF GE C44-9W Dash 9. 📷: May 2022.
A picture taken in August 2020, at about 3,000 metres a.s.l. We see a pair of 1970s Bhe 4/8 cogwheel units of the #Gornergrat🇨🇭Railway, just before they arrive at the summit station, on their way up from #Zermatt. Mount #Matterhorn is visible in the distance.
⚒️ With over 220 tunnel kilometres excavated, the completion of the EU co-funded Brenner Base Tunnel is one step closer! 🇦🇹🇮🇹 Miners have now connected Austria and Italy via two main railway tunnels ↓
#Brussels-Midi 🇧🇪 in spring 2001. This is a push-pull service for #Amsterdam 🇳🇱. The dual-voltage Class HLE11 is Belgian, able to work under 1.5kV and 3kV DC. The carriages are Dutch. The matching livery is inspired by the color schemes once used in both countries, bordeaux-red (BE) and yellow (NL).
#BLS🇨🇭Re4/4 Class #Re425 electrics ended their career earlier today, on a #Lötschberg shuttle. The “Brownies”, as they were affectionately called by railfans, or “Brunelis” in Swiss German, were built from the 1960s onwards. 📷: one such loco with a passenger service at Interlaken Ost in spring 1991.
Maria #Kalesnikava, a freedom fighter who was held in solitary confinement for years, and a musician herself, delivered this year’s opening speech at the #SalzburgFestival. A much acclaimed testimonial about the essence of humanity. Video available for a couple of days. on.orf.at/video/143308...

Hello from an early morning walk along the vineyards and the fields next to our village. Some folks are already up and running, err grazing, at this early hour. Have a good Sunday everyone, and take care!
Out on the bike 🚲 today, along the #Basel🇨🇭#BLT international tram line #10. The tram, running as a sort of suburban tram-train, makes a stop at the beautiful, and sleepy, station of #Leymen 🇫🇷 in #Alsace. They once operated a freight ramp here, handling cargo, as well as a French customs office.
#Belgium’s National Railways #SNCB #NMBS 🇧🇪 were created on 23 July 1926. Happy 💯 🎂 to all railwaymen and women, to all train lovers, passengers, customers … . I took the picture of this HLE Class 20 electric and its Ardennes line #EuroCity 25 years ago, in summer 2001, when SNCB had just turned 75.
Impressions from a ride on the lovely #Sassi–Superga rack tramway in June 2020. The line leads up to the Basilica of Superga, high up above #Torino 🇮🇹 #Piemonte. Beautiful views from up there to the city and the Alps, in the distance.
Whenever possible, we make a stop for a brief hike as we cross 🚗 the #Simplon🇨🇭Pass. The summit area, located just above 2,000 metres a.s.l., is a place of particular beauty.
#Masera 🇮🇹 on the #Centovalli #Vigezzina line is the last stop for westbound trains, before reaching #Domodossola. It is at the bottom of the steep descent from the heights to the Toce valley. Pictured is today’s afternoon local, worked by one of the charming narrow gauge ABe8/8 units from the 1950s.

An Insider’s Guide to 6 of Vienna’s Splendid Public Pools
Whether you’re looking to do laps in the pool or lounge in the shade beneath towering lindens, these swimming spots are a perfect way to beat the summer heat.

Good Morning! Getting ready for the day with some (second) #Breakfast ☕️ 🥐 in the #SBB🇨🇭#elvetino #DiningCar, right in time before the afternoon #hike 🥾😉.
Today is the last day of service for the #ÖBB 🇦🇹 Class #4020 suburban units. Built in the 1980s, some of them spent the early years of their career in the #Innsbruck area. On this photo, taken there about 40 years ago, we see one of this class, next to a 4030/6030 unit.
A prom in Kyiv meant everything to 15-year-old Masha Polska. The Russian war against Ukraine had already taken so much from her and her classmates. She was an avid dancer who had been dreaming of a star turn in the group waltz but that was not to be.
The Prom Went On in Kyiv, but Masha’s Date Danced Alone
Masha Polska, 15, was an avid dancer who had been dreaming of a star turn in the group waltz. That was not to be.

Reflecting Pool, #Switzerland version. Good Morning! (One can find public swimming pools at basically every city and almost every other village here. They usually are municipality-owned and maintained.)
Travelling with @deutschebahn.com on #ICE #118. We can’t stop at #Stuttgart Hbf because of a line-side fire there, it seems. A shoutout to all those railwaymen and -women who are trying to find a workaround, the Conductor (Zugchef, or Zugchefin for that matter), the dispatchers and all the others! 🙏
Good morning from the #DB 🇩🇪 #ICE #InterCityExpress #118. Boarding the train at #Villach 🇦🇹, we soon travel over the scenic #Tauernbahn line, enjoying a late, second, breakfast in the train’s #DiningCar.
🤔 Whatever it is, it seems to apply either way. (It’s too hot today for making a more meaningful post.) #Istria 🇭🇷
