Back in the saddle for 2026! Every Wednesday, I’m going to post a children’s book I’ve enjoyed. If you’ve read it too, or you want to share another book, join in. Unfairies, by Huw Aaron. Why do I like it? Read the alt text! #ukkidlit #kidlituk

Photograph of my hand holding a copy of Unfairies by Huw Aaron. The cover illustration shows Pip, 'a simpleton... a nobody... yet somehow the hero of this story', a green-clad fairy boy with pointy ears and a ginger quiff, standing on the heads of his friend Twiglet and some soldier fairies, holding the staff of destiny aloft.

The fairies who live in the Garden are warring tribes who enjoy nothing better than a big bust-up. When Pip is sent to the Treefolk council to report all their stores are covered in fungus, he somehow* mixes up his papers with an ancient prophecy which warns that only the staff of destiny will save them.
* in a loo-related incident

I like this book because it's silly, bursting with energy and has a tremendous accidental hero in the shape of Pip: chatty, fighty, prone to stupid and impulsive mistakes, party-loving. All the things we're discouraged from being, and yet he triumphs!
