"The Global Left in a Multipolar World: Towards a Planetary Politics of Justice and Survival" is a new book edited by Dena Freeman. I wrote a chapter for it, where I discuss the limits of framing state sovereignty the way the left is used to doing it and the ecological consequences of it.

The Global Left in a Multipolar World:
Towards a Planetary Politics of Justice and Survival

Book launch with editor Dena Freeman (Shanghai Univ) and Zhiguang Yin (Fudan Univ), Sabrina Fernandes (Alameda Institute) and Patrick Bond (UJ)

Can a transformative global left politics be advanced in the context of U.S. imperialism, a potential multipolar world and the urgent climate crisis? The era of the purely national left is over, and the 21st century global left must address the critical elements of class, imperialism, ecology and democracy in a unified way, at a multiplicity of scales from local to global.
Chapters written by leading left scholars explore different aspects of contemporary thought and practice and articulate different visions of potential global lefts, to tackle both injustices of neoliberal globalisation as well as the new threats from an advancing global right, from U.S. imperialism and from planetary ecological crisis. The Global Left in a Multipolar World injects new energy into left thinking.

The NDP’s talk of renewal rings hollow after barring Bianca Mugyenyi from the leadership race. As @nolore.bsky.social writes, ideological gatekeeping and internal bureaucracy stifle democracy and make the party hostile to the transformative politics it once embraced.

By barring Bianca Mugyenyi, NDP shows it’s not interested in renewal

After the NDP barred Bianca Mugyenyi from its leadership race, the party’s claims of renewal ring hollow. As Nora Loreto writes, her disqualification exposes how ideological gatekeeping and internal b...

Mark Carney is right to say that the old order is not coming back. But where his remarks fall short is in their insistence on answering the crises of our time through the lens of neoliberalism—an ideology that has, for decades, hollowed out the very sovereignty he now claims to defend.

What Mark Carney gets wrong about the end of the rules-based order

To re-establish power, defend sovereignty, and strengthen democratic values, Canada and its allies must do more than challenge the American state. We must also confront the influence of US corporate p...

BC MLA Dallas Brodie’s residential school denialism isn’t an isolated controversy—it’s part of a far-right strategy to flood public discourse with disinformation. @seancarleton.bsky.social on what’s behind her “zero bodies” rhetoric and why confronting it matters.

‘Flooding the zone’ with residential school denialism

In light of BC MLA Dallas Brodie’s persistent residential school denialism, it’s important to understand these actions as part of a broader far-right strategy. To help people better recognize this str...
