I'm in @jacobinmag.bsky.social today arguing for young climate activists to salt the just transition. "There must be the recognition that we cannot make the transformations needed if we don’t have an organized working class with a militant labor movement at its heart." jacobin.com/2025/11/orga...

The latest issue of the NACLA Report was co-edited by Breno Bringel and myself. NACLA is deeply committed to socio-environmental justice in the Americas, so we wanted this issue to provide insights into the state of ecological imperialism in the region, including its green capitalist facades.

Cover art by Thais Trindade. The title "NACLA REPORT ON THE AMERICAS" is listed on top. The illustration is like a board game, where communities stand in the way of capitalist and extractivist powers going through the board with tractors and other machinery, commodifying forests, removing people, even as they place wind turbines and other symbols of "sustainable development". The arrow points to the endgame: Green capitalism in the americas.

I joined @andrewonearth.bsky.social for this interview reflecting on degrowth, socialism, & political power. "Our governments are not dealing with the ecological crisis because they are capitalist. So, it is capitalism that must be overcome." breakdownjournal.substack.com/p/interview-...

“Degrowth should be understood as an element within a socialist transformation, as a corrective to productivist strains of socialist thought that are inadequate for our moment. The problem with productivism is that it ignores imperialism & ecology.” breakdownjournal.substack.com/p/interview-...

Using False Statistics to Claim 'Zero Poverty' Helps Nobody

The information on increase in hunger is far more direct and based on readily verifiable statistics, than are the official calculations of poverty.

"It's easy to forget that “crisis” is not simply a synonym for 'bad thing'. A crisis is a turning point... in which a decision is demanded that has not yet arrived." @geoffmann.bsky.social & I wrote on climate politics in a strange time for the BREAK—DOWN Issue I www.break-down.org/post/the-hea...

The Heat of the Moment

In place of paralysis or bland positivity, this is the moment for an honest reckoning with where we stand, what we are up against, and where, already, resistance is underway.

Global warming of more than 3°C this century may wipe 40% off the world’s economy, new analysis reveals

To date, projections of how climate change will affect global GDP have been massively underestimated.

New research finds that trade is impacting biodiversity much more than previously thought. This is why consumption matters. “international trade has caused more than 90% of loss that occurred between 1995 & 2022 due to conversion of natural areas into agricultural land” phys.org/news/2024-12...

Land use in tropical regions: Biodiversity loss due to agricultural trade three times higher than thought

Exporting agricultural products from tropical regions to China, the U.S., the Middle East, and Europe is three times more harmful to biodiversity than previously assumed.

It’s a funny time for “abundance” to be on the agenda when literally the first source of any kind of abundance - species abundance - is rapidly declining across all species and ecosystems. Of course, this is not part of Klein/Thompson’s analysis. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I have now read several reviews on the Abundance book & I don’t think anyone is actually taking the climate or ecological crisis seriously. It’s an afterthought. If you think these problems boil down to: liberals aren’t allowing us to build more you don’t understand the problem.
