Ancient Greek ballots used to kick politicians out of Athens! Broken pieces of pot, known as ‘ostraca’, were used in a democratic process known as an ‘ostracism’. If a candidate received 6,000 votes, they were exiled for 10 years! Ostraca inscribed ‘Themistocles’, 482 BC 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows twelve black painted circular bases from a type of ancient Greek pottery wine cup known as a ‘kylix’. At a glance they look like a display of chocolate ring doughnuts as they have a central hole, a dark painted ring, and a light clay outer ring. They are arranged in a museum display case in three rows of four, one row above the other. Each piece is inscribed by hand with the name of the famous Athenian general and politician Themistocles. They were pre-prepared for use as ‘ballots’ in a democratic voting process known as an ostracism. Broken pottery sherds like this, used as ballots for voting in an ostracism, are known as ‘ostraca’ (plural) / ‘ostracon’ (singular). These ostraca were found in a trove of pre-prepared ballots in a well on the north slope of the Athenian Acropolis. Dated to 482 BC. Seemingly unused, it’s suggested they were pre-prepared to hand out to Athenian voters who couldn’t write. Whilst Themistocles was not ostracised on that occasion, he was exiled following a vote a decade or so later. On display at the Museum of the ancient Agora in Athens. Museum label says: “Ostracism was a unique type of voting intended as a means of protecting the city against aspirants to despotic power. The result of the ostracism vote was valid only if there was a quorum of 6000 present. Each voter scratched or painted on a potsherd the name of the man he thought most undesirable. The "candidate" with the greatest number of votes against him was obliged to withdraw from Athens for ten years. Ostracism was decreed by Kleisthenes and was used through most of the 5th cent. B.C. In many cases it came to be used as a tactical manoeuvre between rival politicians.”
