I'm starting to think that AI safety can carve out a pretty big niche for itself as one of the groups saying "Hey we're also concerned about AI but won't call you a monster for just using the models"

Hate that I hold this opinion but I gotta say I've noticed that a lot of people who criticize male friendships as being 'stunted' often seem to communicate entirely in therapy-speak with their own friends and see that as the only way to actually emotionally bond with people.

Pwnallthethings@pwnallthethings.bsky.social · 5d agoNone of which is to say the environmental impact isn't real or shouldn't be chased downwards, but the reason it's real isn't because using the tool is particularly environmentally damaging by itself, but because the sheer scale of how many people are using the tools.
There's an incredible amount of learned helplessness in this debate. It should be pretty easy for educated adults to just look into current estimates of chatbot use, but so many people act like that's completely beyond them.

New useful estimates shared by John Bistline. A good rule of thumb is that it would take about 1000 Wh in a data center to raise the average American's daily carbon footprint by 1%
I think my ideal society would be lots of overlapping wildly unalike communities that are politically and socially free to be so different that they often don't like or trust each other. The last thing I want is a single inspiring vision.
