When the going gets weird the weird turn pro. Researching and writing about AI and other topics from a broadly effective altruist perspective. On a grant from Coefficient Giving. andymasley.com

In the last few years Hip City Veg, Shouk, and NuVegan have all permanently closed in DC. I have these memories of a forgotten more refined civilization but now I'm doomed to wander the wasteland, can only communicate what it was like in fables

I see a lot of PETA's messaging as pretty bad but also like I feel like I haven't fully internalized the animal situation after 10 years as a vegan because if I had I'd also probably go crazy and just do insane tasteless stuff all the time because oh my god

I'm starting to think that AI safety can carve out a pretty big niche for itself as one of the groups saying "Hey we're also concerned about AI but won't call you a monster for just using the models"

Aparna blocked me for disagreeing with her but keeps criticizing me behind the block. It's kind of overwhelming how adults are consistently disagreeing with the very least controversial thing I say (individual prompts are tiny by the standards of how we use energy) by pointing out that I'm an EA

New useful estimates shared by John Bistline. A good rule of thumb is that it would take about 1000 Wh in a data center to raise the average American's daily carbon footprint by 1%

I think my ideal society would be lots of overlapping wildly unalike communities that are politically and socially free to be so different that they often don't like or trust each other. The last thing I want is a single inspiring vision.
