Yikes. Going through HS focus groups right now and one group of student's "one word to describe school" are back-to-back: Involved, Stressful, Invasive. 😩 "Stressful because you're measured in grades. And you always have to be here...then you're always thinking about being here."

Students overwhelmingly do not experience productive stress at school: "One middle school group alone mentioned 'anxiety' 11 times and 'stress' 15 times. Students at all levels frequently mentioned stress and anxiety impacting attendance, engagement, and performance in school."

Anxiety and Stress
Anxiety and stress were consistent themes reported by students across every focus group. One middle
school group alone mentioned “anxiety” 11 times and “stress” 15 times. Students at all levels frequently
mentioned stress and anxiety impacting attendance, engagement, and performance in school.
Test anxiety and anxiety over grades are common experiences. For many students, the abstract concept
of “the test” and the stakes associated with grades trigger a stress response in the nervous system that
floods the body with adrenaline. For students who have a healthy stress response or have executive skills
and social supports to help manage stress, test anxiety can be a manageable and even productive form of
stress; however, students who experience fight-or-flight responses in other areas of their lives – particularly
the toxic stress of students living with ACES – or associate their stress response with other traumatic events
are unable to overcome their embodied stress response to perform the cognitive tasks demanded by “the
test”.
According to the CDC, ADHD, anxiety problems, behavior problems, and depression are the most
commonly diagnosed mental disorders in children and frequently occur together. It’s not only important
to attend to the SEL components of learning (addressed later) but also recognize how environmental and
pedagogical choices mitigate or exacerbate the embodied learning experience for all students, especially
for students who are either neurodivergent or struggling with mental illness.

There is NOTHING Trump or his administration can say or do to reduce economic uncertainty. So yesterday he said he’s not firing Powell. Whoop de do. As if this is a permanent state of affairs that one could base predictions on. Same with tariffs. Same with alliances. Same with everything.

I wrote a paper in January 2012 about how to deal with the risk of a US dollar collapse. It seems relevant now, so here it is. An Application of the Catastrophic Harm Precautionary Principle to the Risk of a US Dollar Collapse

US companies are screwed. No one will trust their products - either digital or physical - since they must do whatever the administration says or face its wrath. (Is there a kill switch?) No one will *want* to support US businesses because America has become an untrustworthy rogue state.

What is happening now is that the US government is still bearing the name and rituals of its former self but there is no more ‘there’ there. It’s a ship of Theseus that is now misnamed and all predictions made about it having the characteristics of the USA are null and void.

Do you find yourself moving in & out of groups where you’ve felt *obliged* to adhere to rules that weren't your own? @angelawalch.substack.com wrote a wonderfully clarifying & succinct paper on this, “The Protocol System Experience." Have a look: shorturl.at/GS7qO (1/3) ⬇️

The Protocol System Experience

A protocol system emerges when a group of people acts in relation to a protocol (a set of rules, laws, norms, standards, traditions, etc). This broad category includes nations, religions, professions,...

Just reread Animal Farm so I could talk about it with my daughter and wow does it nail the trajectory of crypto. “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, & from man to pig, & from pig to man again; but it already was impossible to say which was which.”
