Enhancing human potential with cutting-edge technology since 2016.
Interesting day at a conference on ‘Resilience’ organised by Cambridge Wireless. The closing talk was by an ‘ethical hacker’ showing how insecure most of our everyday products are. Scary and fascinating!

This would be particularly unfortunate, as Open Source AI systems are by nature the most transparent and accessible. https://opensource.org/blog/ensuring-open-source-ai-thrives-under-the-eus-new-ai-rules
Ensuring Open Source AI thrives under the EU’s new AI rules
In 2024, the European Union approved the Artificial Intelligence Act, the world’s first legal framework for AI. Part of the law mandated the creation of a Code of Practice for General Purpose AI for AI developers. The OSI applied to take part in the drafting of these rules, but when the first draft arrived, we discovered issues that would make it impossible for Open Source AI projects to comply. Here’s how we fixed them.

Friends, for something to be open source, we need to see 1. The data it was trained & evaluated on 2. The code 3. Model architecture 4. Model weights. DeepSeek only gives 3, 4. And I'll see the day that anyone gives us #1 without being forced to do so, because all of them are stealing data.

Each time you see a targeted ad, your personal data has just been exposed to thousands of advertisers & data brokers through a process called "real-time bidding" (RTB). This lets data brokers harvest & monetize your online activity, which fuels government surveillance. 🧵(1/11)
