writer, proofreader, book reviewer, collector of books, movies, music, comic books, and too much other stuff. Gay. He/Him pronouns.

Finished Bruce Kilkowski Jr.'s Monsters Unborn: The Lost Universal Monster Remakes. Kilkowski focuses on attempted remakes from the 80s-2000s for which scripts were completed, rather than chasing every idea that never made it past a passing mention by someone somewhere somewhere.

I'm at Pulpfest in Mars, PA this weekend. It's a small convention dedicated to the pulp magazines of the 20s - 50s. It is also host to three "mini-conventions." FarmerCon (for fans of SF Grand Master Philip Jose Farmer), DocCon (Doc Savage fans), and The Shadow Con (fans of The Shadow).

I forgot how relaxing it can be to just sit and color and not overthink or stress about all the other stuff I I usually stress about. It also kept me away from the phone for a little while (he says as he posts the pics to social media). Original art by Anthony Castrillo.

Since I've been scrolling far too much lately and not doing enough of the things I really love, I'm setting myself a Holiday Weekend Read-Watch-Listen-Write-athon (why not take advantage of a three-day weekend). It's not about quantity or hitting goals, its about refocusing. Will post updates here.

Tuesday's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: Gravestone 1 (1993). Writer: Martin Powell Cover and Interior Art: Thomas Derenick & Mike Miller Letters: Time Eldres Editor: Roland Mann I do seem to love supernatural super-heroes almost as much as I love straight-up horror comics.

Hand holding a copy of Gravestone Issue 1. The image is a closeup on the masked gace of the titular hero: a white skull with long thin teeth and yellow eyes, behind which is visible a bit of blue collar and cloak.

Monday's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: Night Force 1 (1982). Cover: Gene Colan & Dick Giordano Writer/Co-Editor: Marv Wolfman Art: Volan & Bob Smith Letters: John Costanza Colors: Michele Wolfman Co-Editor: Ross Andru Another of my all-time favorite series, overdue for a reread.

Hand holding a copy of Night Force Issue 1. Beneath the logo, the ghostly figure of Baron Winters holds up a pentagram-inscribed plate on which stand three figure. To the left, in trenchcoat and blue suit reporter Jack Gold. In the center, apparently on fire, red-haired Vanessa Van Helsing. To the right, in green shirt and pants, scientist Donovan Caine.

Sunday's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread was Ka-Zar the Savage 1 (1981) Cover: Brent Anderson Writer: Bruce Jones Art: Brent Anderson & Carlos Garzon Colors: Neil Yomtov Letters: John Costanza (Somehow, the credits were left out of the issue, so this info comes from Grand Comics Database)

Hand holding a copy of Ka-Zar the Savage Issue 1. Beneath the logo, three figures run towards the reader in front of a red Expanse of sky. On the left" red-haired Shanna The She-Devil in leopard-skin one piece outfit, carrying a knife. In the center, blonde-haired Ka-Zar in wolf-skin loincloth cloth and boots and gold wrist circlets, also brandishing a knife. To the right, orange-furred Zabu the Sabretooth tiger.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: All-Star Comics 58 (1976) Cover: Mike Grell Wtiter/Editor: Gerry Conway Ary: Ric Estrada & Wally Wood Letters: Ben Oda. Colors: Uncredited per GCD possibly Tatjana Wood? Another of my all-time favorite DC Comics series.

Hand holding a copy of All-Star Comics Issue 58. Beneath the logo, Star-Spangled Kid, Robin, and Power Girl rush towards the reader, above the prone/unconscious figures of Green Lantern, Wildcat, the Flash, and Doctor Fate.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread (it's still Friday in at least 2 US timezones): Werewolf By Night 19 (1974). Cover: Gil Kane Writer: Mike Friedrich Art: Don Perlin & Vincent Colletta Letters: Tom Orzechowski Colors: L. Lessmann Editor: Roy Thomas

Hand holding a copy of Werewolf By Night Issue 19. Beneath the logo, a text box to the upper left says "There's blood on the moon when-- Werewolf battles vampires!" While a text box on the bottom left says ,"The haunting of Hollywood Hills!" The main image is of the brown-furred Werewolf, in torn green pants, being attacked by two vampires. The male is dressed like Dracula, trying to bite the Werewolf's neck while saying "Strike Liza! Even a wolf-man can provide fresh blood for the Undead!" The red-haired woman to the Werewolf's left is trying to bite his shoulder. They all appear to be on the Moon, while Earth hovers above them in the background.

Here's the thing about horror: not every scene, every moment, every shot can be creepy or weird or hyper-directed. Horror requires normalcy so that the horrific can jolt and unsettle you out of the mundane. If every single facet is stylized or abnormal, the weirdness becomes tedious... and unscary.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: All-Star Squadron 31 (1984). Cover: Jerry Ordway. Writer & Editor: Roy Thomas Pencils: Rick Hoberg Inks: Mike Machlan Colors: Gene D'Angelo Letters: David Cody Weiss & John Costanza. It makes sense Post 100 returns to the book that started this project.

Hand holding a copy of All-Star Squadron Issue 1. Beneath the logo, Uncle Sam points at the reader as he says "Uncle Sam wants You -- To Save The World!" Beneath him, members of the All-Star Squadron run and fly towards the reader. Clockwise from upper right: Hawkman, Sandman, The Ray, Johnny Quick, Midnight, Phantom Lady, Batman, Manhunt, Robin, Liberty Belle, Green Arrow, Star-Spangled Kid, Crimson Avenger, Superman, Plastic Man, and the Black Condor.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: The Tomb of Dracula 18 (1974). Cover: Gil Kane Writer: Marv Wolfman Art: Gene Colan & Tom Palmer Letters: John Costanza Colors: L. Lessmann Editor: Roy Thomas Post 99 in this series is my favorite Marvel Comics series of all time.

Hand holding a copy of The Tomb of Dracula Issue 18. Beneath the logo, the brown-furred Werewolf By Night, in torn green pants, leaps from a high rooftop on the right towards Dracula, in black suit and red-lined cape, on the left. Dracula carries an unconscious woman in brown cashmere sweater and grey miniskirt, as he strides across a lower rooftop. Text on the upper left says "Man By Day -- Werewolf By Night!". Text on the bottom right says "Two of Marvel's most macabre super-stars --in a Battle of the Monsters!"
