This is a delightful thread of really stupid injuries suffered by MLB players. I think European football players are the only group that can compete. Off the top of my head, Philippe Mexes injured his eyes by staying in a tanning bed too long without eye protection.
My bf is a Giants fan and this coming out one fact at a time over several hours last night was fun. “He was already injured and got hurt out drinking…on a scooter…which he crashed…into a truck? …a FIRE ENGINE? …IT RAN OVER HIS FOOT? HE DID THE SAME THING IN COLLEGE??” nypost.com/2026/07/31/s...
Also, if you have a running Edsel today, it's genuinely cool. The Cybertruck will never be anything but pathetic.
bloomberg has a fun article today arguing that the Cybertruck is the biggest flop in automotive history. it includes this glorious graph.

Melanie - Brand New Key (1971) 🎵🎶
"Brand New Key" is a pop song written and sung by American folk music singer Melanie. Initially a track off Melanie's album "Gather Me", produced by Melanie's husband Peter Schekeryk, it was known also as "The Rollerskate Song" due to its chorus. It was her greatest success, scoring No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during December 1971 and January 1972. Billboard ranked it as the No. 9 song of 1972. It also scored No. 1 in Canada and Australia and No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart. R.I.P. Melanie 🎵🎶 Before you go, please remember to 👉 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞✔️ 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 👍 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 ➡️ 𝗘𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 🎵🎶 Thanks for visiting 🎵🎶

What song did the Sirens sing in The Odyssey? Wrong answers only.
The short official standing on his tiptoes for the photos is hilarious
How long will it take Infantino to drag his ass off the podium after the trophy presentation?
Seems unfair that Argentina gets a singer while Spain got some dudes with trumpets.

Because when it's pitch black at 7:30AM in December we're all going to feel less depressed.
BREAKING: the House just passed my bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent! Leader Thune should bring this bill to a vote in the Senate so we can finally get this done. More sunshine. Less depression. Let's finally lock the clock!
I'm actually surprised FIFA didn't set the draw so that Messi would get the Miami quarterfinal. But this is the best of all possible outcomes.
Showing this clearly British reporter to all the people who said I was racist for joking about how I was concerned about putting England/Norway in Miami
Bringing Lukaku on in the 60th minute. Can he really go 30 plus stoppage? He's either going to score the winning goal or have a heart attack on the field. There's no in between.
My grandmother was married 5 times to 3 men. When she got married for the fifth time, the local paper ran a fairly unflattering feature about it. It was the mid 1950s, but it was still pretty gratuitous given that she was not an important person in any way.
Growing up I remember Elizabeth Taylor getting roasted for being married 8 times to 7 men. I just found out Mickey Rooney was married 8 times to 8 women during the same time period. Not only did he not get roasted, I never heard about it. Gee, I wonder why.
It's very lonely being the insufferable pedant at a raucous party.
A Norway fan has gone viral for not taking part in their Row celebration after matches and won't do it if they win the World Cup "It’s factually wrong; they didn’t row, they sailed over the Atlantic”
Any clothing historians etc recognise these glass buttons?
Calling all #Seaglass and #vintage fans. We’re trying to identify these lozenge shaped glass #buttons with offset lettering - found in Sydney, Australia and various parts of UK esp Scotland. Anyone recognise them? www.instagram.com/p/DaWIzjYT8-...
CONCAF teams have only ever been round of 16 teams. And that's still all they are. I don't think the FIFA/Trump shenanigans helped, but in the immortal words of Rasheed Wallace, ball don't lie.
I’ve seen worse first hand and also heard the same from colleagues. The number of students admitted to PhD programs this fall dropped 15% from the previous year. What Trump has done to US science will impact us for at least a generation.

It's true that lifting Balogun's suspension is not even in the top ten most corrupt things that have happened in a world cup. May not even be top twenty, if we're being honest.
With all due respect, this is silliness, y'all. He hasn't ruined the USMNT. We don't have to do anything in the Belgium game but play. Come on, we're not special, this is FIFA, this is usual host-FIFA corruption, this isn't even the first time this World Cup--Ronaldo! Not that big of a deal.
I'll add that he's deprived the team of the opportunity to achieve an epic victory. Winning despite missing their best goal scorer due to terrible officiating would have been a legendary moment for the USMutantNinjaTurtles. Now the best they can do is win a game people will see as rigged.
Trump has done such a massive disservice to the US football team and American fans with his intervention. He's essentially politicised the team through tainting them with his corruption. The rest of the world is now rooting for Belgium tonight for political reasons. That's not how sport should be.
That Italy is no longer a proper football nation anymore is shocking. But not half as shocking as the fact that it is suddenly a tennis powerhouse.

As a historian of early modern Europe, I just want to say how grateful I am to get to see an actual schism. I'm hoping we get to see a full blown interdict before this is over. Also just wondering how many of the Swiss Guards are from the now schismatic congregations?
The kid is unbelievable. And he was first up too. You have to feel for the rest of the field who watched that and knew they were all just fighting for second place at that point.
you ever seen somebody so good at what they do that his opponents were chanting his name and carrying him off the stage afterwards
