#otd in 1806 the botanist, publisher and bookseller William Pamplin was born. A central figure among 19th century botanists, Pamplin made several botanical tours to Wales before finally settling in Llandderfel, Meirionydd. The Pamplin Papers at Bangor University’s Archives and Special Collections.

Our volunteers have started the work of transcribing items from the #Penrhyn Archive (Jamaica), from @archpbu.bsky.social They give an uncomfortable insight into daily life on sugar plantations in #Jamaica, and the lives of #African and Afro-Caribbean slaves who were working there.

#otd 160 years ago the Mimosa landed at Porth Madryn, Patagonia. The ship had set off on 28th of May from Liverpool with 153 passengers. Here we have the notebook of Edwyn C. Roberts, a passenger on the ship, who documented the 2 month journey to the new Welsh colony . BMSS/759

Today marks the start of the Menai Strait Regattas, raced over a fortnight on the Menai Straits, an event that has been running for over 200 years. These days races start at Beaumaris and Caernarfon and include routes that sail through the Swellies and around Puffin Island. Date: 1837 Uncatalogued
