Anybody know of large-scale studies on the literacy of older adults (age 65+) in the United States, post-1990s? I'm finding a bunch of "health literacy" stuff, but the National Literacy Institute, National Center for Education Statistics, etc. seem to think that the need to read stops at age 64?

A song about today’s weather, to the tune of “Frère Jacques:” 🎶 Cold and rainy (cold and rainy) This is crap (this is crap) Time to go back to bed (time to go back to bed) Nap, nap, nap (nap, nap, nap) 🎶

If anyone at CSCW is doing or knows about work studying how athletes are dealing with online security/harassment issues or how sports (like the WNBA) become focal points for clickbait, AI slop, or political propaganda… come find me, I want to chat!

When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.

Organizing group projects checks all of my Virgo boxes: ☑️ Using my craft supply arsenal to write student names on color-coded little slips of construction paper, sliced with my Big Teacher Paper Cutter ☑️ Sorting things into neat little categories to optimize the best possible outcome ☑️ Playing God

#a11y hivemind: what, if anything, can be done for accessibility for looping videos on websites? I'm thinking about a video description or equivalent to alt text for a still image. For example, the video overlay banner on the homepage of this coffee site: kaldiscoffee.com

As a technical communication professor, let me say that there is nothing more enjoyable than when I receive an “important safety notice” email about a product I’ve bought that gives me no guidance on 1) what the safety issue is with the product, or 2) what follow-up action I should take. A+ job.

Conference acceptances abound! I will be at Computers & Writing (Athens, GA), Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (Rolla, MO), IEEE-ProComm (Sønderborg, Denmark), and ACM-SIGDOC/Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication (Lubbock, TX). Who will I see where?

RIP to the hole on the street outside my apartment that’s been there since I moved in last year. I don’t know how the report I filed with the city of Atlanta last week convinced them to finally fill it (and on a SATURDAY!), but I feel almost godlike in my power having done so.

The hole in the street, with a metal plate covering it, and a spray-painted label on the pavement that says “HOLE” in May 2024The hole in the street, January 2025, with the metal plate shifting to reveal a cavernous inside. Seven orange traffic cones block the hole from traffic. The hole in the street, February 2025. The spray painted “HOLE” has faded with traffic. The metal plate has shifted even further, revealing a gap of three or more feet. The hole in the street being filled by a work crew on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Continually hounding my college’s communications team to put captions on their damn Instagram video stories and documenting this on my faculty annual review as “academic service”
