Amazing visit at UF to collect amphibian testes from the Natural History museum and give a seminar. Met amazing people and met some amazing specimen. Lacking pics of people but here are some of my fav critters that I sampled! Special thanks to Dave Blackburn and Coleman Sheehy for all their help! 🐸

Another beautiful testis specimen on the SEM! This time Leptodactylus boliviana. You can see the broad undulating membranes (the wavy bits) stacked together in the sperm bundles 🤯

Rhacophorus nigropalmatus testes sections from a museum specimen collected in 1980! The sperm have fantastic structural integrity after almost 50 years 🤯 Also, check out those curly sperm heads!

Nothing is better than a good night of herping! Spotted salamanders, wood frogs, spring peepers, green frogs, eastern spotted newts and redbacks all out and partying while the weather was warm.

A side quest/future project of mine is to figure out what the axial fiber in amphibian sperm tails is made of. Maybe the same material that makes up the fibrous sheath of mammal sperm? These SEMs show an intact cell and one where the cell membrane is lost revealing the protein structure of the fiber
