Media doesn’t “make” anyone do or believe anything. But it does provide permission structure and prioritization for what people think society will accept them doing or believing. This can be much more powerful and determinative than the seterotypical didactic propaganda we typically imagine.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

another reason to socialize healthcare is so that it doesnt let bad people use accrued wealth to put a thumb on the scales like this because they are afraid of their date rapist grandson not being able to afford a morgan wallen branded doghouse to store his jet ski in during the winter

The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.

from job listing:

As the Director of Anti-Extremism, a typical day might include…

Assembling and updating a database of the DSA’s most extreme ideas and statements and a repository of voting records, affiliations, and issue positions to make available to allies and partners;
Leading public opinion research to identify and test the contrasts that move base voters away from these extreme candidates;
Overseeing the development of memos, talking points, rapid response materials, and other products that make the case against these extreme forces in American politics;
Promoting and marketing our research and materials to ensure they reach decisionmakers quickly, repeatedly, and at scale through a coordinated distribution infrastructure;
Recruiting and arming a group of young, diverse spokespeople to fight the DSA from a center-left perspective and assembling a broad coalition of organizational partners to make the case against extremism;
Running an earned media program to create a drumbeat of our message in op-eds, television appearances, podcasts, and traditional and digital media engagement.

Lots of tech companies are releasing surveillance specs & I’m reminded of the internal Meta memo to put facial rec in their glasses during a “dynamic political environment” because people will be too focused on other issues to resist. Companies think now is the right time to foist these on us all.

How do surveillance, censorship, and technologies of control get weaponized—and how do we push back? I spoke with Jonathon W. Penney, author of "Chilling Effects: Repression, Conformity, and Power in the Digital Age," about his roadmap for reform.

A social app where everyone’s avatar is a baby pic of themselves and you let your inner child speak to the other inner children on the network. The arguments would be so cute 😍

Climbing the hill of AT protocol and starting from scratch on a new network seems daunting after Twitter/X thoroughly destroyed all the joy in the short-form content experience. Advice on starting over on Bluesky?

All I can think about is Jeff Bezos saying that he slashed jobs at the Washington Post — including those of foreign correspondents in the Middle East — based on "the data," and a few weeks later a whole war breaks out in the Middle East that these laid off folks would have covered as true experts.
