Mobility and Agency of Everyday Objects in Late Medieval Italy), l’intervento prende le mosse dal ritrovamento, tra le carte dell’ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova, di un registro delle masserizie incamerate e rivendute dall’ente tra il 1360 e il 1390. Si tratta di anni di riordino, ridefinizione e sperimentazione amministrativa per l’ospedale, grande beneficiario di lasciti di beni e proprietà. Un paziente lavoro ha consentito di identificare il volume con il cosiddetto “Libro delle masserizie”, nel quale sono elencati gli oggetti che l’ospedale intendeva rimettere sul mercato. Ne emerge l’immagine di un vero e proprio emporio, un bazar presso il quale si rifornivano donne e uomini della città e del contado, e in particolare i rigattieri. Dopo un esame ravvicinato del registro, dei circuiti di beni e delle reti sociali che documenta, proponiamo di allargare lo sguardo all’insieme dei registri contabili che il grande ospedale mette a punto nel corso del Trecento per incamerare, gestire e mettere a profitto gli ingenti flussi di beni mobili di cui era destinatario. La nostra relazione propone un primo affondo complessivo nella documentazione trecentesca del principale ospedale fiorentino – ancora sorprendentemente poco studiata – e nello spaccato poliedrico di cose e persone che vi ruotavano intorno."

What Catherine left unsaid (but what her spiritual father ultimately revealed)

Since mid-2025, the Art&Inequality project has expanded its research eastward to the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). The extensive collection of the State Archives, housed in the Sponza Palace, contains over 7,000 testaments that are being studied for the project. One testament from the mid-15th century is especially interesting because of an enigma: it contains a typically vague bequest seen in the Ragusan wills, but a later note written on the same page reveals it to be one of the most detailed and striking artistic bequests that I have thus far found from the Ragusan testaments.
