A little update on this: I've been slowly tinkering on the Pi and teaching myself Linux concepts since last Autumn. I doubt I'll ever be an expert in this stuff, but I have it doing some basic stuff like LAN file sharing and simple script automations. It's been kind of a weekend hobby.
