Some people want to do a thing and other people want to be a person who does a thing. These are 2 fundamentally different goals, but at first glance, the people who pursue them seem very similar. Once I began trying to discern the difference, the world started making a whole lot more sense.
There's a certain type of writer that likes to claim that thinking about craft, studying other writers, and possibly even reading other fiction at all will "destroy your unique voice" ... and every single one of them writes in identical faux-edgy Reddit prose that is completely interchangeable.
