As ever we are really busy at the moment. Currently carrying out thinning work for the National Trust at Ickworth, Suffolk. A 7ha site removing dead and dying ash trees. The timber will be used in the estate biomass system and also sold as firewood into the local market.

I recently carried out some bank side coppicing operations around a lake owned by a local client. The lake had become over enclosed so I opened it up to provide a mixture of tree growth stages around the site. The fishing looks good to!

Started my daily walk before sunrise this morning. I really enjoy the quiet, still coolness at that time of day. No one else about! Sadly found this tawny dead on the road. Still warm so it had not long happened.

There has been an awful lot of commentary just lately about wildfires. Dunwich is in my local area. Some of it has an agenda, some is factually incorrect. I saw this information published by The Moorland Association this morning. This appears to be a balanced take on the situation.

With another site wrapped up and a move back to a client nearer home, it’s nice to have the machines washed before starting on a fresh site. It’s also nice to see rapid regeneration of the site I felled in autumn 2026. Aspen filling the void left by the ash.

At my last site ran this old rabbit fence on top of the wood bank. One of the estate workers said that he remembered the fence being put when he was a lad in 1965. Some of the posts are completely sound! How many fences being put up today will still have sound posts in 2087!!

East Anglian Royal Forestry Society division meeting today at Weasenham today by kind invitation of the Coke family. Magnificent softwoods and mixed species, continuous cover forestry. A lunch of Muntjac pies (shot in the wood) were also provided.

I pride myself on the quality of our work and the condition of our sites post operations. Today I have returned to a timber loading bay to clean it down of bark and debris, remove safety signs and adjust the gates. All our contracts are managed until the last job is complete.

This caught my eye this morning on my walk. A teasel head, very common but it’s natural construction make it complex and visually striking.

I made a site visit today to a coppice compartment I felled a couple of years ago. The woodland floor was covered in common spotted orchids. Encouraged by the increase in light levels this shows the vital importance of woodland management to sustain positive, rich habitats.

Something a bit different today. In a woodland I thinned last year I have been grinding and mulching stumps on the line of a new circular woodland walk. This is a diversification project for my farming client. Without the stumps the paths can be managed with a standard mower.

We have lived in our house 15 years and we have never had a Bee Orchid come up in the front lawn. I don’t know of any local populations. So where has it come from? Glad it did though.
