Social Construction

When we say that "sex is socially constructed" what the fuck do we mean? Lots of us like talking about gender-sex as a broken up thing, where gender, that’s the social, sex, that’s the biological. But the {biological} is social, and the {social} is biological.

Butler got their arguments. Fausto-Stirling got hers. The journal *Endnotes* got their own thoughts on the “Logic of Gender.” But me? I like concrete. Sure, we know sex gotta be socially constructed due to the variable understandings of the concept and the experience of those—willingly or unwillingly— classed “intersex”. But that don’t give us the nitty-gritty.

Here’s how I see it. Binary sex is the assumed separation of two chains. These chains are made up of words-that-aren't-words. Take a look:

The social construction of sex is, then, on a spectrum with the social construction of gender. It's all about policing the chains, keeping them separate and clear. A lot can be, has been, and will be said about this. One thing that has to be said is that it’s not actually universal; this is a “Western construction. One of many actually; some ways cut out some steps of the chain; others rearrange them. A lot of TERFs quietly add in a master-term, one that looks like a “sexed soul.” That helps reveal that it is, in fact, socially constructed; the way that biological variation is “supposed to” fit together is socially constructed.

Getting Tested is an Act of Trust and Love

i see a friend comment on not wanting to have to rely on a test, to be able to just trust the person, and it grates against every fiber of my being.

being willing to share sexual histories is a way i show that i care about my partner’s well-being. that i get tested regularly shows that i want to make sure my partner is safe, even if the test was done out of an abundance of caution and i have been with no one at all it is a ritual to be performed regularly to ensure that should a situation arise, i have taken into consideration the safety and comfort of my partner.

and mistakes happen and people are lied to and there are any number of reasons a person might not test negative, but it is something that needs to be known and accounted for. to have an STI is not something one should be shamed for of course, but wilfully refusing to know if one has one is another thing entirely.

I'm struggling to be angry of late.

I feel more numb.

Same cause, different outcome.

Food costs more. Health is less. Across the world people are mired in wars and famines and ecological nightmares all of our own making…

And it's numbing.

Anger feels more alive though. Anger is a fire. A fuel. Fuel for a powerful engine, to drive me.

Numbness is just a poison. It's a pit.

I don't want to be numb. To see millions die and tell myself I've seen it all before.

I know I have, but that's not the point. Every death is a tragedy, no matter how many preceded
it.

So fuck it.

I'll burn this whole thing to the ground before I sink into despair.

I resolve to be really really fucking angry.

I hate seeing this symbol.

Every year they appear, sprouting on pockets up and down the country. Cheap pa-per ones, expensive metal ones, a rash of red that reminds us how very lucky we are to have our army.

War is a tragedy.

But you wouldn’t know it from the way Remembrance Day is ‘celebrated’ now. An orgy of
writhing politicians, desperate to bring a violent and hateful public to climax with gushing praise for ‘our boys’. Turning the dead
into props to assert their own capacity for ‘glorious’ violence.

World War One was every worst excess of the State writ large; 9.7 million soldiers dead, 10 million civilians (we don’t talk about those
though, do we? We talk about the trenches, the sacrifices soldiers made, we forget the greater
number of civilians murdered in the conflict, no room to remember them). The same number again left maimed.

In Flanders Field is a glorification of this. It ends with the demand that we keep fighting, throwing more lives away, because the State has already murdered so many of us that we owe the dead some victory.

“Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.”

Disgusting, and not a common sentiment when people remembered the cost of war. This
propaganda makes it seem noble that twenty million people became corpses and a further twenty one million suffered life changing
injuries, all because of the squabbles of aristocrats excited to prove that their populace were better at slaughter than the others.

Fuck the poppy. Fuck the torch. Use it to burn Flanders’ Fields.

Wilfred Owen said it best:

Abolish Doctors

ATACK has written before about how doctors are cops and I fear some readers might mistake that for figurative prose. Doctors are like cops or whatever. After all, a doctor can't lock you up…

Can they..?

Okay so they fucking can. And you already knew that. But did you know they can lock you up with even less accountability than the cops get? Crazy, I know. Interesting choice of word there, but I'm keeping it. Anyway we've all recently been reminded of the steam-ing pile of authoritarian shite that is the Mental Health Act, whose many sections (hence the verb “to section” someone as in lock them up for being too mentally ill) give doctors and the courts powers to lock someone up indefinitely. This reminder came in the form of the sentencing of an autistic guy who hacked and attempted to extort the likes of Rockstar Games, and Uber. Victimless crime of course because how can a vampiric megacorp ever be a victim.

Judged too autistic to stand trial (by doctors), they slapped a Section 37 on him. Sure, that requires a jury but the jury isn't asked to determine guilt. Guilt requires criminal intent. They were just asked to assess whether the guy did the cyber-crime which of course he did. And of course he was “violent while in custody”.

Why the fuck do they call it “custody”? It's imprisonment. Violent restraint. To respond to such violence with violence is the most natural human impulse that to hold it against someone is to punish them for asserting themself as a person. Which is the fucking crux of it isn't it. Too mentally ill and you're not a person. You gotta be put in “custody”. To be “looked after”.

What this looks like is a hospital order that can be renewed indefinitely by a single doctor for life, only lifted if the doctor feels that the person in “custody” is sufficiently treated as to earn release. Oh and also the other clause applies means the Justice Secretary has to approve it too. So good luck.

But the guy's autistic! That's not something that goes away. So either they traumatise him into compli-ance or lock him up forever. Either way, that's a teenager (did I mention he's eighteen?) that will never be free.

So fuck that.

Fuck tech giants.

And especially, fuck doctors.

that’s when some people might, understandably, self-medicate with whatever they can

with no hope of medical intervention
and fuck it, the chart already says drug addict.

so your untreated chronic pain
or your anxiety for which you will never again see real medical intervention
or your unmanaged adhd with a higher pattern of community suicidality than depression alone
turns out you can medicate this non-exhaustive list yourself if you try hard enough
but that’s where drug cops come in
and your medical history says you’ve gone further into addiction

so they throw you in supervised rehab
random drug tests
activity monitored - where does your ankle bracelet say you’ve been?

jail or prison, especially if you’re not white sectioned and stipulated for mental health

only to be still considered an addict when you’ve tried to be good for years
without relief from your symptoms

all you wanted was relief
relief isn’t coming

instead you are now part of the population of drug addicts, labeled by doctors for rejection by society for your crimes.

and they say the medical model replaced the moral model of addiction.

Hah.

The story so far: In the beginning, Gender was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

To paraphrase the late Douglas Adams. (Late as in he died in 2001, not just that he was terrible with deadlines even though he was that too)

Not only was Gender created, it was created multiple times, as if a god wanted one more iteration just to get it right. Sex, language, social classes, social roles, identities, all one big mess we call Gender despite being multiple different things.

Is gender a prison, a map, a sham?

I just feel very Gender today.

As in, Gender is a wall between me and you. You can't see me and I can't see you, but if I fuck with the wall, you'll see glimpses, shapes, and see the impression I make on the medium. We still have the wall but now you know it's there and now you know I'm behind it.

Why are we Angry?

We have a million reasons. We could never list them all. But anger is the only rational response to the ruin and death of friends and loved ones, and the government and media shrugging, wiping their hands of blame, and continuing on regardless.

Why "Tranny"?

This question can be interpreted one of two ways: "Why are you trans?" (Boring, pedestrian, pointless, cursed by a witch for stealing rhubarb I guess) or "Why do you use the word
tranny?" (provocative, bold, uncomfortable, makes you check over your shoulder while reading this)

So to the second one: You can say "trans person". Anyone can say "trans person". Nice enough phrase, gets the point across. But a lot of the time, what a lot of people are saying is "tranny", and even if you're a delightful cis person who would never wish harm on anyone, you need a reminder that there are plenty of your peers who are much less polite, and just pretend to be.
The writer of this section is a tranny because announcing it that way primes you, dear reader, for a conversation where I am angry and threatened and not a mere hypothetical,
euphemistic, regular "trans person" but a mad
bitch in a fucking war.

Because it's a silly backronym, okay? Cops and Kings stands in for "authority" but here is an inexhaustive list of grievances against both fig- urative and literal cops and kings.

· The police state is a
primary tool of oppression used to assault our community.
· All laws are imposed through violence and the threat of violence.
· The police defend our enemies and punish our protectors.
· There is no ‘innocent’ means by which to engage with the police. All police uphold a system of injustice, even ‘the good ones’.
· Borders and their enforcement keep our kin across the world in states which are even more dangerous to them than the ones most of us writing this experience.
· Anti-cop, anti-state action is therefore self defense. There can be no space which is safe for the police which is also safe for us.

· The most dangerous cop is the one in your head; the one which stops you from being free through fear of the consequences.
· The arbiter of a person’s self-identity is that individual themself; no label cops.
· Respectability politics is the means by which the community determines which members are acceptable to sacrifice for cishet comfort. We say that there is no acceptable sacrifice.
· Except cops. Live as a cop, die by the cops.

· Even outside literal monarchies there are plenty of ‘kings’. From the obvious billionaires and presidents to local ‘kings’. Landlords, managers, doctors etc.
· Kings are those imbued with authority because of who they are rather than what they do.
· All authority must always be challenged. Even deserved power legitimately gained corrupts, and most power in the world is not granted legitimately.

Over forty thousand people, so many of them children, have been murdered by Israel. We don’t know for sure how many because they killed the people who kept count.

But breaking windows to protest this is a problem.

The world is burning. Every year is hotter than the last. Temperatures are becoming unliveable in places where thousands, soon to be millions, live.

But blocking roads to protest this is a problem.

The police mobilise against refugees. They drag our friends into vans and try to fly them halfway around the world.

But confronting them to protest this is a problem.

You commit murder and call it a right to self-defence.

You burn the world and call it progress.

You abduct our neighbours and call it safety.

And you call me a huge problem to a sane world?

Where is this sane world? Would be nice to visit.

But you’re right about one thing. I’m your problem.

A Scene From an Average Street

A man in a white van sits in traffic waiting for the lights to change, playing his music loud enough for everyone to hear. Searching for distraction, he spots it across the street at the bus stop: A tranny!

Three-day stubble and a pretty dress! He must catalogue this moment. He tries to surreptitiously take a photo on his phone but the tranny notices. Oh no!

"You're confused, lad! Are you a man or a woman?!" The tranny does not respond. Just stares
indignantly. But the lights have changed, so he has to leave without answers.

But it is of course the *tranny* who is confused, he reminds himself, trying to keep his eyes on the road.

On Help

How about a wild idea?

Instead of another expected protest, another lame slogan and another meaningless platitude on „socialism“ you just fucking help people and let yourself be helped?

If you really want something better, if you really want people to be free, then walk the walk and start doing mutual aid. It doesn’t take an org, it doesn’t take donations, it does take a change in your fucking attitude and a modicum of conviction to actually help when someone asks and to let others do the same for you.

Reciprocity, that is what I am talking about. Less of the flashy, aestheticized shit. Be spontaneous and express the empathy and mutual respect that we genuinely need to properly live with each other as individuals.

If you think this is less important than „getting organized“, then I suggest you pull that last-century-socialist stick out of your ass and finally move on to shit that has worked for all of human history.

· Cops and Kings work hard to con- vince us that we have to listen to them; we shout them down to remind everyone that without our submission they have nothing.
· Until the last cell is emptied and the last throne vacant the world cannot be free.
