Love this. I don't use use "north" and "south" in class when talking about this war. I use "American" (or sometimes US or federal) and "Confederate." When you start talking about American casualties in a given battle, you can see student's eyes get wide.

this. this this this. for a decade, I've been telling people that Karen Halttunen's Confidence Men and Painted Women--which I read for my comprehensive exam in 19th century American history--is one of the best books to understand now.

*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.
