Cal Football Is A Never Ending Nightmare. Will Tosh Lupoi Wake Up?

The first time head coach has the California Golden Bears playing at the bottom of the basement in P4 football.

Worst three-game stretches in Cal football history by a first-year coach: Sonny Dykes -101 (-34 USC, -17 Colorado, -50 Stanford) Tosh Lupoi -94 (-34 Wake, -39 SMU, -21 NC State) Roger Theder -84 (-45 UCLA, -25 USC, -14 ASU) Tom Holmoe -71 (-27 Washington, -26 WSU, -18 UCLA)

Cal Football is in a Murphy’s Law year. Everything that could go wrong (injuries, staffing, comms) has gone wrong for Tosh Lupoi, but can be patched by a good 2026 finish; and if anyone can rebuild through recruiting & the portal, it's him. My weekly piece: writeforcalifornia.com/p/cal-footba...

Cal Football Is In A Murphy’s Law Season, But There’s Time For Tosh Lupoi To Turn It Around

Everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong for the first time Cal head coach. But there are pathways to finish strong and get ready for the years ahead.

Worst two-game stretches for last five Cal coaches in 1st year: Tosh Lupoi, -73 (-34 Wake, -39 SMU) Sonny Dykes, -67 (-17 Colorado, -50 Stanford) Tom Holmoe, -53 (-27 Washington, -26 WSU) Justin Wilcox -52 (-21 Oregon, -31 Washington) Jeff Tedford, -12 (-2 Air Force, -10 WSU)

Just your very normal, 80% completion rate, 214 yard, first half passing performance from Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele and the explosive California Golden Bears offense on the road against a top 25 opponent.

After a series of inexplicable losses and increasingly catastrophic decisions, I don't know where Tosh Lupoi and the Cal football program go from here. My thoughts on one of the worst defeats in recent history for the California Golden Bears. writeforcalifornia.com/p/tosh-lupoi...

I Don’t Know Where Tosh Lupoi And Cal Football Go From Here

All of the potential outcomes for the California Golden Bears point the wrong way in one of the most pivotal seasons in program history.

Cal was probably not winning, but the JKS decision making is beyond the pale from Tosh Lupoi. You give him a rookie OC who was beyond overwhelmed, then Jackson Brousseau gets a decent play caller, and without giving JKS a chance with that play caller, it’s an open QB battle? Huh?

After a series of escalating disasters this season, it’s a 10 on the Richter Scale for the Cal football program tonight, and I don’t know what the aftershocks will bring.

Cal was down its starting quarterback, top two running backs, debuted a new playcaller, had its best defender out, got its second-best defender ejected, and they threw out the expectations and the disappointment and played ball. Take it and move with it.

Cal presser thoughts 1) There was an agreed gameplan for OC Jordan Somerville to execute at UNLV, and it wasn’t followed. 2) Rivera gave Lupoi the feedback to make a move. 3) Pat McCann built a functional gameplan from scratch with QB2 in a few minutes. His chance to shine now.

The biggest historical concern I’ve had with Cal hiring Tosh Lupoi was whether his strategic deficiencies as a coach were covered up by management from very good to elite coaches like Tedford, Sarkisian, Saban and Lanning, and the first five weeks have laid all those fears bare.

Cal has lost their last 12 meaningful* games that didn't involve Stanford at Memorial Stadium with more than 40,000 fans attending. It is tough to build fan momentum if this is always the result in the big season matchups. *Cal did beat USC in a matchup of 4-7 teams in 2021.

Tonight was horrifying for Cal, culminating a month of alarming performances, with several first-time coaches way in over their heads, and their star QB absolutely muzzled. There are some potential pivots, but the current outlook is very grim.

Biggest worry for Cal all offseason was hiring a head coach who hasn’t been a head coach, who hired an offensive coordinator who hasn’t been an OC and a defensive coordinator who hasn’t been a DC. There were many critical times last night when it showed. They have to adapt fast.

Cal currently sits as 1.5 point favorites over UCLA. I expect the Bruins to be favored by kickoff, as the buzz is off the charts for one of the best hires of the offseason in Bob Chesney. Probably best for the Golden Bears to fly under the radar, but a fun rivalry opener awaits!
