I like to let people think they've had the last word, when really I'm just ignoring them.

Two v good letters (Times) about the heroism of the RNLI but one absolute honker about how we must leave the ECHR to stop asylum claims. So… collapse our human rights framework, trash our international credibility, deny our responsibilities… in yet another ruinously racist brexity fit. No thanks.

Sir, The refusal to accept two RNLI lifeboats at Southampton and Portsmouth with 120 immigrants on board ("Ports made own protests",
, Sep 9) has resulted,
wrongly and unfairly, in the charity being thrust into the political spotlight and debate.
Worse still, RNLI volunteers have been threatened and abused.
Whatever the arguments about immigrants landing on our shores and ports refusing to accept them, the RNLI has just one role and purpose.
For 200 years the volunteer crews when called on have set to sea to save human life. They have saved the lives of more than 140,000 people. We owe it to them to recognise this and salute rather than condemn their actions.
Ronald Neil
Former RNLI deputy chairman and trusteeSir, When the Dunbar lifeboat launched on December 21, 1971 in a force 10 gale to help a young man who had been face down in the water for several minutes, its crew did not know and did not ask whether the person was black, white, Christian, Muslim or a refugee. He was simply a human being in trouble. In setting out to save me the RNLI honoured one of the most admirable philosophies in human history. The fact that their action granted me a wonderful life I would otherwise not have had is a minor point. The important point is that in dedicating itself to the saving of human life the crew members of the RNLI restored my faith in humanity. Greater love hath no person than to risk their life for someone they do not know. Greater hate hath no person than to accuse those who put their lives on the line for others of being traitors.

Favourite quote this week from #garyseconomics "If you don't do Politics, Politics will do you." Political apathy in the UK is eye-watering. Wankers like Rory Stewart and Dan Neidle, think because Gary is from East London, he can't possibly be smart. He runs rings around them all. #taxwealthnotwork
