"The One that Got Away" was inspired by JRPG final boss themes, namely “Vide the Wicked” from “Octopath Traveler II” and “The Final Battle” from “Final Fantasy V”. The call-and-response section in the middle was intended to be a musical back-and-forth.

"Lured & Defeated" is a reprise of the game’s title theme. Reusing the main melody from the title theme was intended to show the fisherman’s journey coming full circle. However, the backing percussion was made more sparse to reflect that he’s alone for this fight.

"Filet of Fisherman" is inspired by “Divine Beast Dancing Lion” from “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree” and “Strongholds of the Sea” from “Sea of Thieves”. Invoking the vibe of an honorable duel between two skilled combatants.

"Of Fish Long Gone" underwent the most changes. The first draft was too high-tempo, the harp section didn’t exist, and the bells were more prominent. Instead of completely reworking the song, I asked for some advice from my faculty advisor and the song turned out great!

Even though all songs within Bait & Tackle use orchestral instruments, the focus on orchestra hits and a more natural string section in "Crustacean Aggravation" was intended to add to the grandeur of the fight. It’s primarily composed in C-minor because C stands for crab.

Prior to composing "Abandoned to Rust", I wasn’t too familiar with working with more metallic instruments, so this was one of the more challenging songs for me to make. Regardless, I think I conveyed the feeling of isolation and mechanicalness pretty well.

Inspired by Celtic/rock hybrid songs like “I’m Shipping Up To Boston”, "Here Comes the Monster" connects the music genre most associated with the ocean with the fish most associated with fishing, and ups the intensity. It’s written in B-minor because B stands for bass.

"Shanty on the Dock" is heavily inspired by sea shanties. It was made before the game’s leitmotif was established, hence why it is one of only songs in the soundtrack that don’t incorporate it. It was also one of the few songs that were made that didn’t require a second draft!

One of my favorite musical tidbits is that each boss theme has a unique style that conveys identity. “Small Fry” is a synth-orchestral hybrid song, conveying a slight sense of unnaturalness that would be felt when encountering a minnow several hundred times larger than average.

"Swamp Sweet Swamp" was one of the first created songs for Bait & Tackle, and directly influenced a number of future tracks. It was the first to use piano as its main melodic instrument, and was the first to use the game’s leitmotif.

This song takes most inspiration from Shin Megami Tensei IV’s title theme, intentionally being too serious and moody for the game’s themes of fighting goofy, oversized, and aesthetically-clashing fish. youtu.be/olp1rzzPq1Q?...
