People don’t realize that Trent Reznor originally wrote Hurt as a walk-up song for Frank Thomas and then reworked it to be about how he felt when Thomas rejected it. This nuance is completely missing from Johnny Cash’s version.
hot take: johnny cash's cover of hurt by nine inch nails is overrated and the original is fuckin better
WV hasn't always been a "deep red" state and there have been gradual shifts in voting since 2000 to get here. The failure by Democrats to win in Appalachia & other rural areas too often gets treated as something inevitable, rather than as a decline that can be reversed by strong progressive policy.
Are Democrats about to make inroads in... West Virginia?!? It's all about those data centers — and a slate of women candidates who are listening to their communities. 19thnews.org/2026/10/west... via @19thnews.org
The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, 1896. Almost got hit by that goddamned train, ran out of the theater and I've never been back since.
First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.
There's already an incessant narrative about this Brewers/Rays World Series being a meeting of "underdogs" despite having their leagues' best records this year and sustained regular season success over the last decade. A good reminder that a lockout isn't about parity - it's just wage suppression.
Rays/Brewers World Series followed by a lockout talking about how small market teams can’t compete will drive me so crazy I’m making myself crazy thinking about it now
Absolutely wild that the director could cut in multiple shots between 3rd and home on this trot.
Junior Caminero hits a HR off the fair pole and celebrates it like a game 7 walk-off. Incredible theater
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness (Buck Showalter not using Zach Britton in the 2016 AL Wild Card Game)
I understand that there's an off day coming but using cade smith for two innings yesterday in a 9-3 game and two innings (maybe) today in a 9-4 game is hazardous levels of wuss
Trying to win an EGOT (Edinburgh Fringe, Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-spelling Bee, Oscar, Taskmaster)
I don't wanna stay at your party I don't wanna talk with your friends I don't wanna vote for your president I just wanna be your tugboat captain
This picture of the Pope at his 40th birthday party is everything to me.x
I love that cycle watch ends for PCA because he hit a second home run rather than a single or double.
When Soto signed a 15 year contract, I assumed it would be the *next* 15 years. Having him time travel to past seasons is pretty clever though. Add him to the ‘05 roster and an outfield with him, Carlos Beltran, and Cliff Floyd is pretty damn good.
this got me thinking, and, y'know, thanks google
The issue here is that the local pronunciation isn't *really* "Mel-bin" - it's somewhere between that and "Mel-burn". If you don't try to say the "r" at all, it comes across as trying too hard to do the local accent. Still way better than "Mel-born" and I think Eagle should get props for trying.
I’m rooting for the outcome that makes the most pathetic field storming in college football history look even more pathetic.
BREAKING: The MAC has reversed its position and is fighting the Big Ten's extra 1 second for Michigan. "The established replay protocol requires that the game clock displayed on the program feed be used in determining whether time remained."
Western Michigan would’ve won that game if football games ended after 60 minutes but unfortunately football games last 60 minutes and 1 second.
"Being Italian" is a spectrum so who's to say that Mamdani isn't?
Amazing
The rookie Murakami sure can swing the hell out of that Norwegian Wood bat. That ball landed South of the Border, West of the Sun for what must’ve been like his 1Q84th homer of the year.
Munetaka Murakami solo HR (29)
We are now in safe harbor hours. You can cuss on Bluesky until 6 AM.
I’ve done some work that’s adjacent to the National Thoroughbred League and wondered what their deal is. So this paragraph makes for some fascinating additional context to me.
fantastic kicker
“Electability” is kind of a loaded phrase but to the degree that it’s something the party should consider strategically, someone who gets outspent like this and still prevails is undoubtedly the stronger candidate.
That Abdul El-Sayed was able to win this race despite being outspent 9:1 is mind-blowing
I follow the “Accidentally Wes Anderson” Instagram account and complain every time they have a post that is intentionally Wes Anderson.
Boris Karloff, with the occasional song from Thurl Ravenscroft
You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?
First time I’ve seen McGarvey on one of these “lists of disappointing Democrats”. Let’s not make it a habit!
The House voted on Tuesday 270 to 155 yesterday for a bill to hobble the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, exempt most bank mergers from regulatory review, and undermine consumer protections. 56 House Dems joined Republicans.
I’m definitely not on board with completely abandoning VAR but when you have to go that far back for a foul to call off a goal, everyone can tell that it’s some bullshit.
Start a back line of Sean Totsch, Josh Wynder, and Josh Jones, with Jonathan Gomez and Manny Perez as wingbacks and Damian Las in goal and I bet this match is 1-0 USA.
