Congratulations to the Friends of the Bath Jewish Burial Ground, which has been shortlisted for Findmypast's Everyday History Heroes 2026 - a new national award launched by historian and broadcaster David Olusoga OBE to celebrate the people and organisations who keep local history alive. A Wiltshire evening in Paris
What a magical evening which came out of the blue. A last-minute invite to join other friends and patrons of the if Opera Company to enjoy a full rehearsal of their latest production - Bizet's Carmen. The company is celebrating its 30th year by performing - for the first time - one of the world's most loved operas, one that is full of passion, jealousy and fire. It was a wonderful run-through of a production that opens tomorrow - August 6th, with further performances on the 8th, 12th and 15th of August.

Confirmation from the government that the West of England will join the top tier of mayoral authorities, which is set to unlock a new wave of powers and funding. The home of the country's fastest-growing regional economy will be granted Established Mayoral Strategic Authority (EMSA) status following an application from Mayor Helen Godwin supported by council leaders. This enhanced level of devolution is already having a real impact in places like Greater Manchester and the West Midlands. The move represents a major overhaul and recognises the West of England's continued progress and enormous further potential to deliver more for local people.

Network Rail's contractors have done a good job of restoring Isambard Kingdom Brunel's last remaining personally designed footbridge over his Great Western Railway. It happens to rest in Sydney Gardens over the 'cut' he made through this former Georgian pleasure garden. It was a part of the line this Victorian engineer designed to look like a theatre. People would gather beside the track to watch his steam-powered, smoke-puffing engines enter 'stage right' and exit - in spectacular fashion - 'stage left.' His trains were, after all, the engineering wonder of the age.

Whenever I set off to do a story l would have a cameraman to worry about the pictures and a soundman to ensure you could hear what everyone involved actually said. These days it's just me and a DJI Pocket 3 camera and wireless mics. Now I have learned from my mistakes to always ensure the interviewee's sound levels are good, but yesterday I also received a reminder that I should check my own too. I set out with my husband Darren to meet up with Helen Huertas, who is the Cultural Programme Manager at the Roman Baths and responsible for the running of a special summer-based event.

Waiting on the steps of the Victoria Art Gallery for it to open at 10.30 this morning, I spent some time observing work to finish off the road re-modelling that has been taking place outside. It seems to have gone on forever. One of the workforce told me it's what lies beneath the pavements slowing things down. Sorting out the utilities, I suppose. Hopefully all will be finished soon. The roadworks are not helping with congestion at this point. The Victoria Gallery sits on a traffic 'island' along with the Empire Hotel and Guildhall.

Work on three walking, wheeling and cycling routes to help people get across Bath safely and more easily is set to get under way this summer and autumn. Work is starting on pedestrian and cycle improvements along the A36 Beckford Road and Sydney Place. Further work will start at Bear Flat from 30 July, where the measures will also help improve bus reliability on the A367. In Royal Victoria Park, improvements are planned to improve links between Weston and the city centre, and these are due to be delivered this autumn, subject to a 21-day statutory consultation from 30 July.

I am always amazed by the variety of material in the Victoria Art Gallery's collection. Curator Jim Riseley has been down in the vaults to round up their entire holding of Japanese woodblock prints, which features an array of actors, beauties and striking landscapes from 19th-century Japan. They are currently on display in the upper FREE gallery - around what is rapidly becoming 'Jim's Corner' - until October 18th. I popped in, out of the sun, to see him this morning. victoriagal.org.uk

Our West of England Mayor, Helen Godwin, has backed new plans to give regional authorities a share of the income tax generated in their regions - as part of a devolution revolution to make life better in every postcode. It follows an announcement by the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and is part of his drive to transfer power away from Westminster. He will also allow mayors to keep some cash from business rates collected in their areas, and gain greater control over services such as housing, transport, and skills. No decision yet on how much, but more details are due to be announced when Chancellor John Healey delivers his first budget in the autumn.

Landmark visit to Bath. Some very special visitors to our city. A delegation from the Comanche Nation, an indigenous Native American Tribe, toured the American Museum & Gardens as part of its first official visit to the UK since WWII....

Some very special visitors to our city. A delegation from the Comanche Nation, an indigenous Native American Tribe, toured the American Museum & Gardens as part of its first official visit to the UK since WWII. During the landmark visit, the delegation met with the Museum’s curatorial team, led a traditional Comanche smudging ceremony, and viewed culturally significant Comanche objects in the Museum’s permanent collection. Lloyd Heminokeky, Jr blessing Comanche Nation collection items in care of the American Museum & Gardens. Funded by the US Department of the Interior, the visit formed part of the Comanche Nation’s wider work to raise awareness of contemporary Native American cultures and to explore future collaboration on collections, heritage, and cross-cultural exchange.
