Allen and Nick wanted something that showed off their new home in Palm Springs and the backyard, which is ready at anytime for a fabulous gay disco 🪩 pool party. The title is lifted from Allen’s incredible chest tattoo. I had so much fun playing with this vibrant color pallette and I would love to paint more pieces like this in the future.

Julie gave me lots of freedom to depict Willowdean but only asked to have her in the iconic pose based on the original cover. I knew just the version of Willowdean and scene I wanted to illustrate. One of my favorite moments in the story is where she performs her magic and enchants the crowd in the talent portion of the pageant. I wanted to depict Willowdean in her rhinestone outfit, a glitter butterfly in her hair (a nod to her love of Dolly Parton) as she performs to “Here You Come Again” (a #1 personal fave of mine), throwing streamers and confetti into the crowd.

If you haven’t read DUMPLIN’, do yourself a favor and READ it. It will tug on your heart strings. It was a game changer for body positivity and trailblazing in its positive depiction of a fat main character in a book. It was even made into a film starring @jenniferaniston and @daniellemacdonald, with music by @dollyparton herself.

I realized that I haven’t done a GUS hand piece in a while. I was in Massachusetts and came across this perfect patch of daises on my path. I love the juxtaposition of a chubby hand holding a freshly picked, delicate daisy. It inspired me.

Bailey was a beautiful and beloved companion to @michael and @matthew. Bailey enjoyed being at their side, jumping in snow, lazing around and hiking the trails. She was both lazy and energetic, and always there to love and to be loved. Matthew described her as the definition of “Man’s Best Friend”and wanted to gift Michael a portrait showing their beautiful connection.💖⭐️✨

I’ve been exploring lately in my GUS series moments of reflection, literal and figurative. I often think about how mirrors change how we think of ourselves and the distortions we bring to these reflections. We bring our vulnerability and anxieties to the surface, but sometimes we catch ourselves looking good and feeling fine.

One of my favorite painters is the queer French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, who currently has an exhibition at the Getty Museum of Art in Los Angeles. One of my favorite works of his is entitled “Rower in a Top Hat”. It has such an immersive, seductive and intimate moment with the subject in the painting. I wanted a similar connection with one of my GUS’. I want to have the viewer caught in the moment before the heave and the ho.

What I did with my version was center it only on GUS and little to do with the surroundings and the view. He is the view. It’s what we are looking “forward” to.

The only detail added in this work is the Belvedere Hotel in the distance. A gay landmark on the bay side of Fire Island, a castle on the water, built by gay partners in 1957.

Dennis Setteducati & Andrew Boza of the Crafty Lumberjacks are amazing! Out of their Astoria N.Y.C. apartment they have been creating incredible crafting projects for all, that are fun and easy to do. They have done segments for HGTV, the Today Show, LIVE with Kelly and Mark and the Sherri Shepherd show. These two are truly a power couple and it was such a delight getting to create a piece of artwork for Dennis, on the right, to give to Andrew, on the left, as their first piece of artwork as a newly married couple. Halloween 🎃 is their absolute favorite holiday, you must check out their apartment Halloween display, so having them in this scene felt right. I’m so happy for them, and for Teddy their cat as well. In my GUS series, I touch on moments of weightlessness and the feeling of being in a bigger body in the moment of floating. I was excited when @mikorux came to me wanting a GUS piece in space, having seen my piece "GUS: Weightless" but done in the blues like my "Blue Drawing" series. It was very fun to have a collector resonate with two elements I had been exploring and give me the opportunity to combine the two.
