The 2025 Online Ringing & Nest Recording Report has now been published. It’s a fascinating record of migration and longevity. Highlights for #ShropshireBirds include a Woodcock to Russia and a long-lived Long-tailed Tit at Attingham Park. You can view the report here: app.bto.org/ring/countyr...
Breeding Bird Surveys (BBS)
@bbs-birds.bsky.social
The UK Breeding Bird Survey & Waterways Breeding Bird Survey; monitoring bird species with skilled volunteers. A @btobirds.bsky.social, @jncc.bsky.social and @rspb.bsky.social partnership. https://www.bto.org/our-science/projects/breeding-bird-survey
We're really fortunate to have a long, varied & beautiful coastline, which is used extensively by birds. Every 10 years or so, we take an inventory of the birds using our coasts through the Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey, and this winter you have the opportunity to get involved.
The SMP data deadline is tomorrow! Please get your colony counts and breeding success data entered as soon as possible, every colony counts! #seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social
✨ Calling young nature enthusiasts!🌿🐦 Join our BTO Youth Team as a Youth Rep (voluntary) ➡️ www.bto.org/jobs 📝Remote, voluntary role. 📌 For young people aged 16 and 24 years old who are passionate about nature. 📆 Closing date: 8 November 2026.
(1/) The recently updated Wild Bird Indicators, which BBS data feeds into, have shown contrasting fortunes for two familiar woodland birds across the UK. Whereas Great Tit increased by 51% in woodland 1970-24, it declined in that habitat by 15% 2019-24… @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social
There are just two days left until the SMP data deadline, your counts are vital to understanding the fate of seabirds around the UK #seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social
(1/) Although not as restricted in range across the UK as Dipper, Grey Wagtail has also declined along waterways across the UK over the last quarter of a century. The WBBS trend shows a 27% decline along waterways. @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social #Ornithology #CitizenScience
Last chance to apply to be our next Bird Atlas Organiser ➡️ www.bto.org/jobs This is an exciting career opportunity that comes around just once every 20 years! 🐦 #Ornithology @rspbscience.bsky.social @birdwatchireland.bsky.social @scottishbirding.bsky.social @birdsinwales.bsky.social

Back with a #WeBSSpeciesSpotlight✨ On the stage today are Avocets💃 These long-legged waders returned from UK-wide extinction in the 1800s, now providing an air of elegance to our wetlands. To learn more about WeBS species, visit BirdFacts➡️ www.bto.org/birdfacts #Ornithology #UKBirding
Data from BBS & @ukbms.bsky.social go towards European monitoring programmes. When combined, they provide even more powerful, if stark evidence for what the future might look like. @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social @btobirds.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social @ukceh.bsky.social
New research using PECBMS data on birds and eBMS data on butterflies highlights a stark reality: current conservation policies are unlikely to reverse declines in common bird and butterfly species under future climate and land-use scenarios. More: shorturl.at/lKpE8
Many of us could do with a reason to get outside, connect with nature, and make a difference for conservation, for our own wellbeing as well as our environment's. Here are 5 reasons why WeBS might be your answer 🍂 @rspb.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social #UKBirding #Ornithology ➡️ www.bto.org/webs
(1/) The bobbing, fast flowing water loving Dipper dropped in numbers along waterways by just over a third since the survey began in 1999. This species is mainly restricted to the western areas, especially in the south of the UK. @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC #Ornithology
BTO’s own Louise Bacon temporarily traded the flatlands of Cambridgeshire for the rugged landscape of the Isle of Rum in this week’s featured blog post: www.bto.org/get-invo... She even managed to get there by public transport! @btobirds.bsky.social BTO Scotland #Ornithology
(1/) Small rodent species such as the charming and trapeze-artist like Harvest Mouse are occasionally recorded on BBS squares. If you are looking for something to do this winter, why not sign up for the National Harvest Mouse Survey? @btobirds.bsky.social Mammal Society #CitizenScience
(1/) The UK Bird Indicators have recently been updated, which BBS data feeds into. The upland indicator has shown that the smart Whinchat dropped in numbers by almost two thirds 1994–2024. Read on to find out more… @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC RSPB Science #Ornithology
The Wild Bird Indicators make for concerning reading. Habitat related trends from BBS data are included in these Indicators, so thank you very much to all of our dedicated BBS volunteers who have contributed to our understanding of bird populations across the UK. @btobirds.bsky.social #Ornithology
1/ Nature is in peril. Drastic declines and specialist species struggling is what the Wild Bird Indicators, using BTO data & published by Defra, show. Here’s what we know ⬇️ The All Bird Species Index shows 19% declines in the UK since 1970. This comprises 132 species. 📉 #Ornithology
This weekend is the International Golden Plover Census🌍🪶 If you fancy another outing to your WeBS site, we would love for you to do another count so we can feed more golden plover data into the census, or you can log your plovers in BirdTrack if you want to go elsewhere!📋 #UKBirding #Ornithology
(1/) The last summer migrant warbler species that we have a WBBS trend for is Whitethroat. This conspicuous species with a scratchy song declined by almost a quarter 2014–2024 along waterways. Species information: www.bto.org/learn/about-... @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social
This weekend, 17-18 October, is the International Golden Plover Census. WeBS data will be included in the census, but if you see any flocks of Golden Plover away from wetlands and are able to record a count, we would be very grateful if you could enter this to BirdTrack. Photo: Liz Cutting / BTO
(1/) For the next few weeks, we will be sharing stories from some of our intrepid Upland Rovers volunteers. Simon Cunningham shares his experiences of surveying three squares on Jura in the Inner Hebrides: www.bto.org/get-involved... @btobirds.bsky.social @btoscotland.bsky.social #Ornithology
Ever see these species? We’re looking for volunteers for the Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey this winter. Sign up➡️ www.bto.org/webs-news All you need to do is walk your chosen survey sector along the coastline once between 1 December & 31 January & count the birds you see. #UKBirding
