Nice review of my & R. Allen's edition/study of the Aynho Cartulary in Speculum: doi.org/10.1086/741982. '[T]he book provides an excellent model on how to investigate the records of what at first sight would seem to be a somewhat insignificant and underresourced institution.' Hard work paying off! ☺️

Nearly two centuries after the Battle of Hastings, this thirteenth-century reader still had strong feelings about Harold’s claim to the throne!
Ordered three 12th-century manuscripts into the reading room. All three arrived 🙂 All three were ‘special access/select’ 😩 This means no photos even for research purposes or as aides-mémoire for writing up the research 😑 None of them is digitised 🙃 This really isn’t great @britishlibrary.bsky.social

Absolutely baffling that fewer and fewer young people from around the world want to travel long distances and part with huge sums of cash to study in a defunded and decimated HE system whilst living in a hostile and xenophobic environment. One of life’s great mysteries.

Deeply dissatisfied though I’ve been with a great many aspects of Starmer’s premiership, a parliamentary democracy that goes through seven leaders in a single decade cannot be taken seriously. It’s farcical. It’s unsustainable.
