Shakespeare for brain rot Current Shakespeare on Substack

In the introduction to The New Oxford Shakespeare edition of King Lear, Namratha Rao makes this unknowable play more accessible. And you probably won't find a more readable Lear than this quarto only edition, edited by John Jowett. #Shakespeare

“Hartley gives the reader a new version of the play with additions that are subtle and radical … the reader seems to be in the presence of a working writer, director and scholar in conversation with Shakespeare, separated by 425 years.” ―Current Shakespeare

In her introduction @amylidster.bsky.social rarely focuses on Shakespeare and makes a compelling case that the collaborative play Henry VI Part 1 should be considered a serious work separate from the other history plays and has convinced one person it is much better than remembered.

My introduction to Shakespeare was "Everybody’s Shakespeare" (later "Mercury Shakespeare") by Orson Welles and his mentor Roger Hill. These condensed plays are hard to get but I haven't found a better place to start. #Shakespeare

Andrew James Hartley’s experience in the theater adds a number of new and interesting choices to a play that is very difficult to add to. Julius Caesar also happens to be one of my favorite works of Shakespeare and an excellent place to start. #Shakespeare
