If you haven’t seen the news — or the echo-chamber on X dot com — many far-right media outlets and media personalities are celebrating recent layoffs at PressProgress.
Due to financial constraints, we had to lay off PressProgress labour reporter, Emma Arkell, who was an invaluable member of the team.
When Emma shared the news online, several columnists and bloggers jumped at this, with some expressing joy at a young female reporter losing her job.Shortly following Emma’s departure, PressProgress’ former Editor, Luke LeBrun resigned of his own volition to pursue other opportunities.
Right-wing media once again jumped at the news of LeBrun’s departure, alleging that he was fired or pushed out — none of which are true — and that as a result, PressProgress is dying. I am here to say on the record as PressProgress’ Executive Editor: that is absolutely not the case.
We are committed to doing important work and serving our audiences. In fact, we published four new stories last week, while some outlets convinced themselves we were dying. This week, we’ve already put out a podcast episode and two newsletters.
In addition, our newsroom is also unionized, meaning that should our financial pressures be alleviated, we reserve the right to recall employees who have been laid off.
So while there are some who think that PressProgress is on its last legs, we would like to personally assure you: we aren’t going anywhere. We will continue to tell stories that matter, and work to sustain and build our team as funding becomes available.
