Assemblage sculpture by American artist Betye Saar, 1960s-2000s, who passed away this week at the age of 99. Her practice often reclaimed found ephemera with racist and sexist themes, as well as using objects related to her own family history.

Paintings by Polish artist Erna Rosenstein, 1960s, who survived Nazi occupation though her family did not. She was a member of the Polish Workers' Party and a leading figure of the Polish avant-garde, rejecting the Socialist Realism style of the Stalinist era.

Photos by Italian-born artist Maïmouna Guerresi, 2000s-2020s, who after converting to Islam in her forties explores Islamic spirituality and mysticism in her work, influenced by Sufi traditions in Senegal, Sudan, and Morocco.

Works on paper by self-taught American artist Minnie Evans, 1960s, whose drawings were inspired by her visions of “the lost world” (nations destroyed by the Great Flood described in the Book of Genesis). She was one of the first Black artists to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum.
