How we built Netlify Database for AI-native development

Explore the thinking behind designing and building Netlify Database—a database that can be provisioned, branched, migrated, and operated safely in workflows shared by humans and agents.

Your users are lying to you. Matt Biilmann (@biilmann.blog), co-founder and CEO at @netlify.com, says users will always tell you your product is "really cool" after you show it to them. But if they don't try to use your tool after you've sat down and walked them through it, you have a problem. 1/3

👀 I have achieved continuous deployment to @netlify.com from @tangled.org. Add a workflow like so: tangled.org/philippeserh... Add site ID + Netlify PAT: tangled.org/philippeserh... ☑️ PR → deploy preview ☑️ Push to main → deploy to prod Deploy URLs tucked away in pipeline logs, but it's a start.

Hot damn! Have been on Netlify post static buckets (10+ years ago?)... as tooling (and the world) has changed, there are so many doors opening in the "a frontender can do it all" reality... I've mentally fathomed a few presentations about this, the pieces all being in one place is integral to that!

Our team just released @netlify.com Database! My absolutely favorite part is branch databases tied to my feature branches. First thing I tried to make is Cher's outfit organizer from the movie, Clueless! 💁‍♀️ netlify.com/blog/netlify...

Coffee, waffles, and a conversation about agent experience (AX). If you're a devtool founder in SF, we're meeting on May 5 at Blue Bottle Coffee. Joining us: @inazarova.bsky.social and @biilmann.blog, who coined the term AX. Space is limited, so sign up to secure a spot:

Devtools founders coffee and waffles: Agent Experience (AX) · Luma

We're gathering a small group of devtool founders to talk about agent experience. This is a small, founder/builder-only gathering in SF. Attendance is limited…

Build your way. Ship on one platform. Start with a prompt or your editor. Build a fullstack app with APIs, databases, AI, and observability. Ship to a global CDN in seconds.

AI can make teams smaller and roadmaps faster. That's the least interesting part. AI should help us be more ambitious and push the boundaries of what we build. I'm using Agent Runners to do fun, quirky things on my blog, that would never have been viable pre-AI. biilmann.blog/articles/ai-...

AI and Ambition

AI isn't just about efficiency—it's about unlocking ambition. Small experiments on a personal blog reveal how AI agents let us push ideas further and build things we'd never have time for.

Opt-in is a deliberate choice. Opt-out is a choice someone else made for you. We think the industry has the default backwards. We don’t sell your data, and we don’t use your code to train AI models unless you explicitly opt in. More from our CISO Mark Dorsi: www.netlify.com/blog/you-own...
