E. Idaho immigration attorney and liberal Mormon.

My favorite pizza place is 30 minutes away but they've just announced they're opening a second location just one block from my office and I'm going to have to practice immense amounts of self-control.

Noticing a disturbing trend with reported immigration processing times. A type of case that was reported to take 32 months in July is now reported as taking 36 months. And it's like that for a wide variety of kinds of cases. At this rate I'm not sure these cases will ever get approved.

A friend from SLC stopped by for lunch with his wife and two of his kids and his 12-year-old daughter finished off a slice of Sam's Club pizza and something like 15 pieces of Sam's Club sushi. Impressive for both the amount eaten and that a 12-year-old's eating sushi.

The website for the local chain of banks is down (or rather, blocked by my computer security for being unsafe), probably due to some wider internet issues impacting a number of businesses. Anyone else having issues accessing financial websites?

Wondering why my disk drive was running low--and it's because Microsoft decided to download copilot without my permission. Stupid Microsoft, easy fix.

While we don’t have a smoking gun yet, there is reason to believe that earlier this year the Trump admin ordered USCIS to arbitrarily cap the number of immigrants who can become citizens each month. Backlogs in the naturalization process are now skyrocketing.

Monthly naturalization approvals fell sharply from an average of 70,000 per month in 2024–2025 to roughly 22,000 per month. USCIS reported a pending backlog exceeding 742,000 naturalization cases. www.npr.org/2026/10/13/n...

My little sister just told me she recently had a guest post about her time as an LDS missionary on Exponent II titled the Worst 18 Months. It's a fantastic look at what the experience is like for an introvert with social anxiety (both family traits) and she did an excellent job writing about it.

BYU-I's new Viking mascot looks more like an un-Viking--short, smooth, hairless, a sleek charmer when he wants to be, otherwise a bully, and with an enormous unsupported ego.

"Invests in comprehensive book series," "Reads diverse literature," "Builds with LEGO extensively." Ouch. Time to reduce how many books and LEGO sets I buy. "Chooses progressive rock and alternative music." Guilty of the first, but I'm not an alternative fan so they do in fact make mistakes.

Amazon users are discovering a bizarre "About You" page that reveals what the company thinks it knows about them One woman found Amazon had determined she "has flat buttocks"

Just got a cold email asking if I could take on an immigration case for about a quarter of what I typically charge and I'm debating on whether or not I should even bother with a response of "no thank you." In any case, that kind of email has all sorts of red flags. No decent attorney would take it.

You know how google tells you that the annoying summary it posts at the top of google searches is AI? I firmly believe it should be a requirement that ALL forms of speech that are AI prominently tell you so.

Granted, I didn't see a ton of movies in my childhood, but I saw some friends were impacted by that didn't bother me. Arachnophobia when I was about 11 at a sleepover (not terribly scary to me although a friend had nightmares). Fire in the Sky at the end of 7th grade (not terribly scary to me...

I have a confession. The 9 albums that shaped me include a lot of greatest hits albums. The progressive metal stuff I liked (Queensryche, Savatage, etc.) didn't have greatest hits albums at the time, but Rush, Styx, Billy Joel, etc. did--and that was my introduction to their music.

Numbers at my green card seminar yesterday were twice as big as normal. Even with the reduction in international students. The kids are concerned, as they should be.

My high school best friend slash college roommate just texted me to tell me his future son-in-law will be at my marriage green card seminar at BYU-Idaho tomorrow. (His daughter would also be there except she has a class.) Currently feeling my age (old).

Three shows that absolutely should have been in the top 100 (heck, in the top 10) TV shows of the 2000s. NYT screwed up. 1. Fargo 2. Firefly 3. Arcane

I didn't care about pop music when I was a teenager in the 90's. We didn't have Spotify--or any form of music from the internet at all--and I still found plenty of classic rock, prog rock, and prog metal to make me happy. Why in the world would I care about pop music now?

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Jim Risch put out a mailer touting his work "DEFENDING IDAHO'S PUBLIC LANDS." How? By stopping a large wind energy project (eye roll). Had it been a strip mine instead I doubt he would have cared.

Myself and other immigration attorneys have noticed that the government has paused most citizenship applications that have already been approved and are only waiting for a swearing-in-ceremony. Our guess is that they're intentionally delaying these until after the mid-term election.

Asked to speak on Sunday on whatever topic I wish, but encouraged to use a specific talk in preparation. The talk: "We congratulate those bishoprics who are eliminating announcements that detract from the spirit of our worship." Me: um.... (And yes, I'll find a way to sneak that in.)
