Sad to walk daily by the river Wensum in Norwich and still see a great many dead fish. Last Thursday heavy rain caused surface water drainage systems to flush accumulated toxins, at a time when the river was already suffering from depleted oxygen levels caused by prolonged dry, hot weather.

So I took my cassock to the dry cleaners this morning. Turns out there was a cassock convention going on! And there was another rail too.

Privilege to conduct the funeral of Bishop Malcolm Menin, a former bishop of Knaresborough. When appointed, the PM’s Appointment Secretary wrote a few lines of commendation, including “Good man. Fine wife.” Thankfully another saw in him “a man of prayer & holiness in a profound earthly environment.”

The Taizé pilgrims arrived back just after 3 this morning tired but having had an incredible time. My penance for coming back on the TGV and Eurostar (for Abbot of St Benet’s duties yesterday) was to have breakfast ready! Roll on the 2027 pilgrimage!

Until late night I listened in the Taizé church to young people from many different countries. It is always such a privileged to share in this ministry of the brothers. So many of those in their teens and 20s need to hear that they are held precious in God’s sight, uniquely and wonderfully made.

Yesterday the English groups gathered in Taizé’s parish church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene for a joyous Eucharist and a sermon from the Bishop of Bath and Wells focussed on vocation and Jesus’ question: “What can I do for you?” Amazing conversations afterwards.

A new initiative in the neighbouring village of Ameugny is the Friday evening farmers’ market. It seemed a shame not to have a few tastings.

Yesterday in the campsite we had a brilliant conversation with Br Jean Patrick about life as a brother of Taizé, vocation, prayer, celibacy, community, commitment. Deep questions from our pilgrims as they made connections with their own lives and being a follower of Jesus.

A morning away from Taizé in nearby Cluny. Despite annual visits here, it was my first visit to Cluny Abbey - well, the south transept and cloister, all that is left of what was once Europe’s largest church. It founded many daughter communities, including Norfolk’s Castle Acre Priory.
