Monika continues to walk forward despite all the voices. She knew that some of the other club members were suffering like this...But for it to get that bad? The brunette places a hand on Natsuki's shoulder in order to pull her attention away from the voices. "I'm here, Natsuki."
'get out of her head' A voice calls out. 'she is worthless- a mistake- just like you' A swarm of laughter echoed in the void. The pinkette Monika thought she knew flickered- once standing, now her figure on the floor staining the ground in black and red. If Monika didn't know any better...
If Monika had to described it in a single word....It'd just be 'corruption'. Something was very wrong as she begins to approach the pinkette. "Natsuki, what's going on?" She needed more info...First Sayori vanishes, and now she finds another Natsuki?
Just as she arrived. She finds herself in darkness corrupted by hate and sorrow. Fragments of what was the Literature Club float around her, the floor she is standing on barely holding form to keep her afloat. This isn't a normal dream.. no. It feels too real to be a dream. Too fragmented.
As the pinkette loses consciousness, a connection is made between herself and a certain club president. Whatever dream Natsuki was having, Monika would find herself inside of it. "Is this really Natsuki?...Something isn't right." She'd say to herself...She just needed to find the pinkette.
Crumble and grumble.. The ground beneath the pinkette begins to weaken, the sky around her darkening further and further, the clouds roaring with thunder as she spirals further into despair. The sun descends, losing the spark for hope to find her angel. Was she just not good enough? Has the -
When was the last time Monika had slept? ..If asked, she probably wouldn't answer. She's taking another sip of her coffee while staring at her laptop. "You don't just...disappear. Where did you go?" It's only then that she spots something...interesting. Right there in the files. "..Natsuki?"
....That took way longer than a few minutes. Monika doesn't want to talk about what she just saw in there.
"Things have been getting worse since.....Sayori, what did you do?" Maybe another trip into Sayori's mind was in order...It did seem like she was asleep, after all. Give her a few minutes.
Sayori's file is looking.... ...She should look into this. It's not like Sayori is truly aware, right? It's not like MC would know, either.

".....Yeah." Monika had some code to look into for sure. She needed to know what she could, and couldn't do with this situation.
โI'll see you later, then?โ You look over, just barely managing to maintain eye contact.
Monika on the other hand...Is sipping her drink with no issues...Is it not burning her? "...It's fine, you just needed someone to listen."
Once everything was paid for and taken by you and Monika, you're pretty quick to walk out with her. You take a quick sip of your drink. It's... too hot. But you needed an excuse to look away and think of something to say for a second. โ...weird first date. Sorry about that.โ
Monika's mind was definitely elsewhere right now....But she is nodding. "Yeah. That would be good for now. I'll probably just grab black coffee." .....In other words, she's not sleeping tonight.
โYeah... uh, how about cookies, instead? That'd be a nice change from cupcakes, right?โ ...yeah, next topic. No salvaging this entirely, but... you can try. โI'll just get something sugary to drink. A latte or something.โ
Monika did a bit of a rush job when making this place....So she just threw in anything she could. "Yeah, that does sound good. We wouldn't want to stay too long, right? Aha..."
โ...yeah.โ You glance at the nearest clock. Wait- this place has an analog clock? Damn, that's like seeing a unicorn or something... โUh, speaking of- should we take an order to go? We've... been here longer than I thought we would be.โ
"...Yeah. You know where we'll be, of course." Monika had a feeling that MC would probably bring Sayori to the next club meeting....She had to mentally prepare for that.
โ...we need to talk more. All of us, Monika.โ Even if you wouldn't push much more on information today... you wanted to make at least one thing clear. You weren't forgetting your questions. Not anytime soon. โ...especially at the club. We haven't done anything in ages.โ
"That's good....Perhaps it's best not to mention this to the others, of course. We wouldn't want them to worry now, would we?~" Monika seemed to smile now that it seemed like MC was calming down with the interrogation.
...you're not sure how to respond to that. It was... deeply profound, you'll admit. But like everything else Monika's said in the last few minutes, it's sending... mixed signals. โ...right. I'll... take your word for it. And I'll try to think that way. I- I guess...โ
"And who said it was a front?" ...It was. "MC, if things weren't alright...If hypothetically, you weren't real, would you be questioning it?" Monika would genuinely ask. "You're thinking about it. You're asking about it. That in itself should give you an answer. It's all okay, nothing weird is-
โ...you might be able to put on that front for the others, but I don't think any of us can. I don't think they see through it, either.โ You sigh, resting your head on the tabletop. โHow could you know for certain? Whether it is or not? I don't get how you're just... so certain of it all.โ
"If something were wrong, I'd tell you. The others would too." ...Another lie, but MC didn't have to know that right now. Did he? ...Neither did the other girls for that matter, least of all Sayori.
โ...you say that so confidently after questioning everything about me. And... making me question it, too.โ You chuckle weakly, squeezing Monika's hand. ...yours was shaking...
"....." There's a moment of silence before Monika reaches out, accepting MC's hand. "You aren't." ...Monika would answer bluntly.
โThat's not that reassuring...โ You reach across the table. You weren't expecting any kind of gesture in return, but... you needed some sort of anchor right now. Even if it made you feel vulnerable. โ...what if... what if I'm what's wrong here..?โ
"You really shouldn't be, MC. Everything is fine." It was becoming increasingly difficult for Monika to even think of excuses to deny that things were all wrong. She can't just...insert memories into his head. Not while he's questioning things like this.
โWhat does the way I'm acting have to do with the way you phrased that? I never questioned my memories being real. Not directly. I was wondering how I couldn't clearly remember YOU, Monika.โ Cafe. Right. That's where you were right now. โThat's just it, I never worry, and- I think I should be.โ
"...Because of the way you're acting." Monika slipped up. She knows she slipped up. How can she fix it? She's tapping on the table..... ....Since when was there a Cafe here? "You're worrying over things that you shouldn't."
...there's a long moment of silence, as MC stares at Monika, processing her last sentence. โ...why did you phrase it like that, Monika?โ Your tone shifts audibly. It's deadly serious- no longer just inquisitive.
"I get up early, MC." ....More like she just never slept, but that was neither here nor there. "Getting to school early just helps with scheduling." ...Either way, she's shamelessly lying to MC right now. "Why does all this matter all of a sudden? Your memories are real."
โYuri and Natsuki are blocks away, that's not as close as me or Sayori. As a matter of fact... you living close to the school checks out. You're ALWAYS there before us.โ โEven if you aren't in the clubroom yet...โ
It felt as though she was being backed into a corner the more they talked. "MC. Do you know how many times Sayori has mentioned that you live right next to her? I don't live as close to the school as you all do." ... She's at least thankful that nobody else is here for this.
โThen how do you know where I live?โ You drop the question with as much tact as it deserves. โWhere Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki live? Without any of us knowing where you live? Sleeping in class doesn't magically make Hometown harder to navigate or something-โ
"When would we have had a chance to go to my house, MC?" This wasn't Ive....That much was obvious. It couldn't be. Unless Ive was messing with her....But he must've been too panicked to do that. "It's not like we were close before....Besides... Don't you and Sayori have a habit of sleeping in-
โWe were in every class together, and yet I know nothing about you! Not your friends, where you live- nothing! And yet you insist, along with my memories, that- that we know each other somehow! And have for years!โ After a moment, you return Crocus. You were getting loud. โ...seriously.โ
"We haven't spoken much. You know this." Could Monika potentially save this? Who knows at this point. She's going to try, though. ...The truth was probably more unbelievable, anyway. "We only really started talking after you joined the club!" ...That didn't explain everything else.
โBecause, I-โ ... โ...because I'm realizing just how little I know. About you, the club, the school we go to- even Hometown. I remember things so clearly up until the literature club, and that's- not normal. It can't be.โ โAnd one of the people I don't remember clearly is you. How?โ โHow??โ
Monika seems to freeze up in that moment, as if she was trying to figure out what exactly MC meant. ".....Why are you asking this now?"
... โMonika... who are you? I want to know about the club president beyond a name.โ You've officially bitten the bullet.
Monika hesitantly raises a hand, petting the Bulbasaur. "I see..." She's just sort of...staring at it? She seems to have her answer! But did MC get his?
โThat's kind of what we've been doing while we've been away? For the most part, anyway...โ He seems friendly! Not an ounce of worry about Monika as it greets her with a happy babble. โHis name is Crocus. And, in fact, Sayori actually helped ME get him. Not the other way around.โ
There's a silence that follows as Monika stares down at the creature in front of her. .....Was she rethinking everything? No, just her approach to this conversation. "...I suppose so. Is Sayori running around with more of them?"
โ...that's not totally true anymore.โ You click the button on the center of the ball, before letting a certain friend out to greet Monika. "Bulba..? Ba!" โPigs flying sounds pretty tame compared to this little guy, huh?โ
Monika raised a brow...She had a feeling she knew exactly what MC was about to do. Not that she was going to clue him in on her awareness... "As I recall, Sayori tends to beg you for one....And you don't even let her get one because you'd be stuck taking care of it."
You try to think of something... anything. Then, it clicks- you have some-ONE you could show to prove your point. โ...look- I don't have pets. Right? At least last you checked?โ You carefully reach for a compacted Pokeball in your pocket.
"...Let's say that you hypothetically did. You make it sound like pigs could fly outside of this town or something." Monika was going to play this cautiously. The last thing she wanted was for MC of all people to become self aware. That'd make it much harder to deal with a certain someone else.
โNo, Monika- you're smarter than that. Smarter than me, I'm pretty sure.โ You were sticking to this. She wanted answers? Fine. ...but so did you... โWe went somewhere else. Did something else. Things we don't- CAN'T do here. I'm not going crazy, I swear-โ
