Retired 40 year English teacher. Big fan of Sinatra, Jackson Browne, Christmas music, crime/mystery novels, Mulaney, and democracy.
I really enjoyed this crime/history story with an nyc setting. Gunner is a great lead, a WWII Scottish vet, and he’s easy to root for.
Thom Tillis wants to pretend voting for Hegseth, RFK, Noem is the same as Democrats supporting nominees who were actually qualified. If knocking Matt Gaetz was supposed to be some sign of courage, he is delusional. I wouldn’t clean Licorice’s poop with his book.
@alanparks.bsky.social just started Deception and really like it. I love the NYC WW2 setting. As former English teacher I wanted to help next edition—p. 21. Has family should be His family??? Have a great fall.
@lauralippman.bsky.social reading George P today—“snapped at each other’s ears and sought purchase”—I have seen this context for purchase in more detective novels than I can count. I have never heard it used in speech. Have you used it like this? Former English teacher who finds this curious.
lauralippman.bsky.social currently reading his AmericanSky, which is masterful, but ordered this other book with a Baltimore cop, Devlin Rourke. Any familiarity?? Thought you best one to ask to be honest.
Food and gas shrinking our savings. Measles cases rising. An illogical, deadly war. Explosive diarrhea American citizens killed on our streets Immigrants sent to foreign gulags. A defense secretary discouraging vaccines and causing illness while encouraging hormone shots. And a naked emperor.
@sohopress.bsky.social really enjoying Eli Cranor’s Mississippi Blue 42. But was shocked by this apparent proofreading error—hard to miss.

Advice from a “senior” teacher to his seniors
I wrote the first version of this over ten years ago, and whatever I said came from my own limited understanding of college and what it entails. I went to Lafayette College, a relatively small school,...

@billsimmons.bsky.social just wondering if Spurs will hire Kareem for a few million to teach the sky hook to Victor this summer.
@jvl.bsky.social the pro trump flavored vapes ad would be funny if it weren’t so perverse and sick.
@crookedlanebooks.bsky.social I know I should wait but 3/4 of the way through Midnight in Memphis I have to say simply that I love this novel.Besides a compelling mystery, we learn about Boss Crump, Memphis history, race relations, and police corruption. And Burnett and Eustace are easy to root for.
Anther compelling Charles Lenox mystery from Charles Finch. Leigh, Lenox’s school friend, is a great addition, and Dallington is easy to root for.
@jvl.bsky.social when trump is gone I hope the new president names it the people’s ballroom. It should be a place to feed school kids visiting the White H. It can become a destination for extra tutoring and lessons. It should be repurposed that it is regularly used to benefit those who need help.

@victorsuth.bsky.social retired English teacher and crime fiction lover, I absolutely recommend Hollow Spaces, a compelling story with themes of sibling rivalry, infidelity, and sins of the father to name a few. The NYC setting is a bonus, and the dual timeline works well. I couldn’t put it down.

@mysteriousbookshop.com I loved this debut mystery that celebrates NYC, Sri Lankan immigrants and citizens, strong women, family bonds, and taxi drivers.
