Deep moisture remains over much of Florida on this first Monday of August 2026! Note the colder cloud tops on this NOAA infrared satellite animation focused on the west coast of Florida with showers and thunderstorms developing across the area.

Impressive rainfall totals across parts of South Tampa early this Sunday morning between 8-9 AM as a cluster of thunderstorms pushed east across Tampa Bay with urban flooding in parts of Beach Park, Culbreath Isles, Sunset Park and surrounding areas.

The wet weather pattern will continue across much of Florida and the greater Tampa Bay region through this weekend. This setup will allow showers and thunderstorms to develop within the moist onshore flow while thunderstorms also push southward from the Florida panhandle today and Sunday.

Tropical Depression (TD) #2 continues to meander within a broad and deep counterclockwise circulation in the atmosphere over the northeast Gulf west of Florida.

A Tropical Depression has formed this Sunday morning from the low pressure area that has been meandering west of Tampa Bay over the past 48 hours - and will drift to the west and northwest toward the north central Gulf coastline over the next few days. Next name on the list is “Bertha”.

The mid level rotation evident in the deep thunderstorm complex about to move off Hernando County (north of Tampa bay) this Friday afternoon will be interesting to watch as it tracks westward over the Gulf waters.

Attention for Friday early rush hour and commute along the Tampa Bay bridges and I275 and I75 corridors: Significant impacts for drivers in the boxed area as two boundaries merge within the hour with frequent lightning, gusty wind and rapid ponding of water on roadways.

A surface low pressure system continues to develop off the coast of Tampa Bay this Friday afternoon and will remain trapped within an upper level vortex and meander just off the coast through the weekend with pulses of thunderstorms rotating across the area.

It’s always nice to feel the rain-cooled air. Here we can see it with the 7 PM ET observed temperatures. Note the heat at Sarasota, Punta Gorda and Fort Myers while temperatures in the mid 70s to near 80 prevail elsewhere with current or recent rain showers!

On July 10, 1989, the Northeast experienced one of its most remarkable severe weather outbreaks, with at least 17 tornadoes touching down from NY into New England, including an F4 that struck Hamden County in New Haven, Connecticut. This tornado was one of only two F4s in the CT state history.

Florida’s peninsula is a natural laboratory for summertime showers and thunderstorms. This afternoon’s visible satellite at 5 PM shows bubbling towers of clouds lining up along our east and west coast sea breezes, where cooler marine air meets hotter land.

A pattern shift is coming for Florida and much of the southeast U.S. starting mid next week and lingering into the second week of July. The changes in the atmospheric low- and mid-level flow will be supportive of higher rainfall potential.
