I am honored to announce that in cooperation with the Toth family, I will be working on the official Alex Toth typeface in the coming months. The plan is for this to be a commercially available font via the official Toth estate. Stay tuned for updates.

New abstract, “Rubber Ducky”. Acrylic on 24”x12” canvas.
Me with every painting: 1) I have this awesome idea! 2) Now that I'm painting, this looks terrible. I'm going to to throw this out. 3) I might as well just slap some paint on here to take out my frustration and make a mess before I throw it out. 4) Oh wait...that's pretty good...
Lovely day. Weekend emails answered, weekend orders for signed books all packaged up, Monday morning clerical work done. Now I can finally get the to the creative work. Listening to some hard bop jazz, and chugging water. Organizing priorities for the day. The post-SDCC rush is still in full swing.
Gave this canvas a textured golden yellow base coat last week. Listening to Flea’s new jazz album and getting back to work on it. I have a vague plan.
First SFX of the day. Two big dummies smacking each other around. (LOBO #7)

I'll be walking around at Terrificon at Mohegan Sun Casino in CT on Friday, August 7th. You can probably catch me pestering Brett Bean at his booth. Good opportunity to get both our sigs on your D'ORC comics. I will also have a pocket full of free Blambot enamel pins!
Status: Currently drowning in post-San Diego Comic Con panic projects, where pros who attended come home and realize they borked their schedules, and are playing hot potato with their colorists and letterers. It's like anti-Christmas for comics freelancers. Sigh.
Orders for signed copies of The Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering from this morning, heading out to you this afternoon!

Out for some grooves today is “Shemp,” a limited edition Fender Custom Shop 1961 “Wildwood 10” Stratocaster with a roasted neck. Tone for days! When I was a teen, I named my very first student-level sunburst Strat, “Shemp”. That one was traded away 30 years ago, but this guy carries on the tradition
“Blues in A” —last week I painted this abstract. After about 2 hours of work, I decided it was terrible and I was going to throw it away. The next day, on impulse I just started adding new shapes to it and it ended up being one of my favorite paintings so far. Acrylic on 16”x20” canvas.

“Please” & “thank you” go a long way, and I feel like fewer and fewer people understand this. Especially in our increasingly “online” society. 1st impressions make a difference, and you’re not going to get the same service if you’re asking for assistance and come off like a jerk.
I’ve seen this Marvel cookbook recipe making the rounds and this is actually Polish galumbkis. (Piekos is Polish, BTW). My dad made these all of the time when I was a kid. They’re one of my favorite comfort foods.
Well, the Eisner Awards are Friday night and I'm nominated for the 2026 Eisner for Best Lettering. It's an honor of course, but my money is on Janice Chiang. For those who voted for me, thanks so much! Sincerely! (And for those who voted for Janice, you made the right call.) :)

Very low motivation today. Just not feeling the mojo. It's just part of being a self-employed comic creator. You have days where you want to be doing just about ANYTHING else. The big tell between an amateur and a pro is the pro still delivers at 100% quality despite the struggle.
Lovely day. Just delivered final files on LOBO #6 to DC. Jumping back on the remastering of Elfquest: Siege #6 for a bit. Listening to Mammoth WVH in the studio and chugging water. \m/ \m/
New painting: "Don't Open the Door" acrylic on 24" x 12" canvas.
