In Linz wurde heute ein #Staubteufel beobachtet. Solche Kleintromben entstehen bei starker bodennaher Überhitzung der Luft: Thermikblasen lösen sich vom Boden und steigen auf. Wenn bereits eine geringe Rotation vorhanden ist, wird diese durch die Streckung des Wirbels verstärkt (Pirouetteneffekt).

The most inspiring week for science here in Vienna continued yesterday with a great colloquium talk on convective mass flux by @andrewilwilliams.bsky.social He even made use of our blackboard!

After a strong start at Lange Nacht der Forschung, the best 2 weeks of the year for science in Vienna continued today with our institute's internal pre-EGU poster showcase, also known as Posters & Pizza @ Exner

Our pre-EGU ice cloud workshop is rapidly approaching, with speakers on day1 and plenty of time for discussions on day2. Thinking about what we want to achieve now, and have a question Why do you think small-scale processes aren't considered as interesting as some larger-scale climate concepts?

The most fun part of LNF26 (both for the visitors, particularly kids; but also for me) was to demonstrate again and again cloud formation! Huge thanks to Sophie Schäringer to prepare it! So what's going on there? Hint: pressure changes, pV = nRT, Clausius-Clapeyron www.noaa.gov/office-educa...

Die Niederschlagsbilanz der letzten 3 Tage - Vergleich zwischen Modell und Messung. Fazit: Bescheiden. Im Großteil von Österreich ist deutlich weniger Regen und Schnee gefallen als berechnet. Und zwar nicht nur bei diesem Modell, sondern auch bei allen anderen. Selten, aber doch kommt sowas vor.
