Clouds and climate; Oblakolog; Cloudy, not blue sky! Senior scientist @univie.ac.at; previously @UW Atmos Sci, PhD @usyseth.bsky.social https://blazgasparini.wixsite.com/blaz-gasparini-site https://klimadynamik.univie.ac.at
From a team retreat to the Gordon Research Conference on Geoengineering in Maine, then NYC, Princeton, and ETH Zurich for the IAC ETH 25th anniversary—before heading back to the office. Wrapped up with a talk for the INCUS community. What a great start to the summer!
Day 6 of "one cloud a day" series: thin ice clouds over midlevel clouds (cloud top temperature of about -15°C) near the Labrador region. Excited to see @wbmol.bsky.social paper looking at similar situations later this year
Day 5 of "one cloud a day" series Congestus anvils over the western N Atlantic, NE of Newfoundland
Day 4 of "one cloud a day" Shallow convection - more and less organized - somewhere south of Greenland
Day 3 of "one cloud a day" series. Very nice gravity wave clouds over the English Channel
Day 2 of "one cloud a day": thunderstorm towering above a sea of midlevel clouds, somewhere SE of Paris
One cloud a day series from the flight yesterday: today - thunderstorm behind Paris
Very nice views on pretty explosive convection south of Vienna when flying just a bit north of it earlier today! No surprise, given the high CAPE sounding
Don't miss the @iiasa.ac.at AI for Climate Science Seminar feat. @aikovoigt.bsky.social & Max Meindl @univie.ac.at (Wed 3rd, 2pm): 🧠 ”How much climate data do we need? Machine learning approaches for evaluating high-resolution climate models” 👩💻 Info & Registration: iiasa.ac.at/events/jun-2...
#skyline #linz #gesichtet
Germany had 2.5 GW of operational grid-scale batteries in 2025, the largest fleet in the EU 🔋 Another 10 GW is in the pipeline. Had that capacity been online in 2025, Germany could have avoided €830 million in gas purchases and solar redispatch costs. ember-energy.org/lat...
A great EGU26! We're almost at the end! Here are pictures of posters presented by our MSc students focusing on ice clouds & convection: Marijan Trogrlić, Shirin Hamzeh Marand, Johannes Elias Hobiger Was great to see them present and getting increasingly confident! @univie.ac.at @egu-as.bsky.social
As always, peak of my science year and the perk of living in Vienna: a beautiful ~8 km bike ride over Donauinsel to @egu.eu conference venue!
Pre-EGU ice cloud workshop edition of 2026 about to start! 80 cloud enthusiasts will discuss all things ice and mixed-phase clouds in the next 36 hours @univie.ac.at. Thanks in particular to @blazgaspa.bsky.social and Wouter Mol for leading the workshop! klimadynamik.univie.ac.at/ice-cloud-wo...
The most inspiring week for science here in Vienna continued yesterday with a great colloquium talk on convective mass flux by @andrewilwilliams.bsky.social He even made use of our blackboard!
After a strong start at Lange Nacht der Forschung, the best 2 weeks of the year for science in Vienna continued today with our institute's internal pre-EGU poster showcase, also known as Posters & Pizza @ Exner
Our pre-EGU ice cloud workshop is rapidly approaching, with speakers on day1 and plenty of time for discussions on day2. Thinking about what we want to achieve now, and have a question Why do you think small-scale processes aren't considered as interesting as some larger-scale climate concepts?
The most fun part of LNF26 (both for the visitors, particularly kids; but also for me) was to demonstrate again and again cloud formation! Huge thanks to Sophie Schäringer to prepare it! So what's going on there? Hint: pressure changes, pV = nRT, Clausius-Clapeyron www.noaa.gov/office-educa...
Had a lot of fun last night with our Meteo & Climate team at the LNF26!
📣 Save the date: Lange Nacht der Forschung an der Uni Wien! 📅: 24.04.2026, 17:00 - 23:00 Uhr 📍: über 100 Stationen an 5 Standorten: Hauptgebäude, Fakultät für Chemie, Fakultät für Physik, Sternwarte & Biologiezentrum Das gesamte Programm der Uni Wien im Überblick: ⤵️ www.univie.ac.at/lange-nacht-...

An unexpected increase in cloud cover partially reduces warming caused by carbon dioxide release

I wish this came ~2 months earlier 50-70 cm of snow on ground in the hills SW of Vienna, above > 900 m, photo from yesterday, near Annaberg...see also their weather station at 900 m (www.lawinenwarndienst-niederoesterreich.at/lawis-und-st...)
Die Niederschlagsbilanz der letzten 3 Tage - Vergleich zwischen Modell und Messung. Fazit: Bescheiden. Im Großteil von Österreich ist deutlich weniger Regen und Schnee gefallen als berechnet. Und zwar nicht nur bei diesem Modell, sondern auch bei allen anderen. Selten, aber doch kommt sowas vor.
Yay, we seem to have inspired a new cool cloud physics event, our first inofficial spin-up Excited to be part of it, and thanks to the organizers for giving me space to talk about career and beyond it! @mathilderitman.bsky.social
I realized I haven't posted a cloud picture since a while. There you go with a view in direction Dachstein from Saturday, before the cold front, with already a pretty moist troposphere, despite mildly föhny conditions
