One of my favorite answers to this kind of argument was from the late, great Molly Ivins. "They say we can avoid a lower standard of living by substituting cheaper goods for what we previously bought. Substituting cheaper goods is what a lower standard of living _is_. "

I love this theme and the replies ; I would lecture on the uses and abuses of logarithmic scales. ( I had an advisor try to introduce a "moment of voluntary mathematics" at a local church when prayer in school was a particularly live issue).

This argument is silly and most never-Trumpers don't believe it, including most of the Bulwark staff. GOP did not lose a single election by having a handful of out-and-out Nazis nominated, and DSA does not have the moral stink that Nazis do. GOP called Al Gore a communist, they don't care.

People who say this is irrational neglect two things. * Optimizing the worst case is usually an ideal strategy, even if the mean returns are a lot lower -- we don't live in the mean world ever. * Getting $65K is an easy, automatic good for most people; having large amounts of money less so.

Diagnoses of stupid or smart are not as useful as the opposition (including me) often think it is; I ask you to stop doing that. People voted Trump or didn't vote at all for a reason that is their reason. Some of them are persuadable, and some aren't; persuade the first, discourage the second.
