Most lowland woods in England are criss-crossed with drainage ditches, dug to help intensive forestry exploitation. Most woods no longer managed, but drainage still maintained for convenience of dogwalkers etc., losing ponds, bogs. Re-wetting woodland to buffer against droughts should be a priority.

Australia has a completely different set of ecosystems to the UK. In Britain, you don’t fight fire with fire: you fight it with water. We have allowed landowners to comprehensively drain our peat bogs, remove farmland ponds, riddle landscapes with field drains. Make Britain Wet Again!

Do large parts of Europe have to become uninhabitable for politicians to start taking the climate crisis seriously? Does a major European city have to be destroyed? How many deaths are required? How big does the obvious economic impact have to become? Insane! www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Flying back into the UK yesterday it was very clear that England isn’t such a green and pleasant land anymore. Everything was parched, yellows and browns across the fields rather than greens. Lakes and reservoirs low. When will politicians wake up to the scale of this? #climatecrisis

Tracking studies are helping shed light on the extraordinary migrations of European Rollers and the international co-operation needed to conserve them. One of Europe's most colourful birds, the species has declined significantly across parts of its range in recent decades.

Stumbled across this newly fledged blackbird at Hilla Green, North Yorkshire this morning. Feared the worst but I’m pleased to report it was seen later on being fed by its mother under some gorse. Also spent time watching a family party of Marsh Tits in the same area. #ukbirds

It’s #WorldBeeDay today - we must create habitat and support our bees. Vital parts of our ecosystems, human survival depends on them, and a great opportunity to celebrate one of my favourite bird families - Bee-eaters. Little Bee-eater and Swallow-tailed Bee-eater taken in Senegal, 2024.
