Despite low volume, Evenings at the Village Gate: John Coltrane (with Eric Dolphy) - Live is exceptionally good, especially considering it was 1) recorded with one microphone during a test session, and 2) miraculously found in the New York Public Library. Definitely worth checking out, turn it up.

This is the only thing I'll say about the HWA pro-AI newsletter: I'm probably wrong, I think the author of the piece did not use AI to write it. Think about that ... while promoting the use of AI, they wrote a pissy, scolding article themselves because AI is incapable of portraying so much scorn.

I love Coltrane, and I know Ascension is considered a classic when it comes to avant-garde jazz, but ... I can't listen to more than a couple of minutes. I know somewhere in that cacophony of horns, keys, bass (2 of the them) and drums there's a tune, but I'll be damned if I can hear it.

For some reason I never listened to Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud by Miles Davis, probably because it was a score and not an actual studio album. Despite some of the tracks ending abruptly or fading out in a strange manner, this album is awesome. I think the fade outs actually enhance the mood.

I like getting new story ideas, even when you're working on something else. Sometimes, your WIP gets a little stale ... case in point ... and a new idea stirs things up. Every book I've published was the result of carrying a brand new idea to conclusion while I was working on another project.

I get ideas from songs, always have. That's how Mojo Rising happened (except it was a whole band) and The Small Hours. Got back on the Allman Brothers kick again. Thinking about the 70s, the road, bands. Vampires. Again.

I grabbed some groceries, cleaned house, scheduled articles for the TIH website, and now listening to Coltrane.

I'm reading THE SECRET DINNER by Rafael Montes for reasons that will become apparent soon enough. The 1st person narrative flow is rewiring my brain about 1st person. Then he starts a chapter with one of the most hilarious yet totally macabre lines ever written. Y'all are going to dig this one.

While I'm not on threads, I do have an instagram. For the record, I don't like instagram ... I famously didn't know exactly where to type comments on a post which lead to some confusion, but hey, maybe figure out where to post before typing 'cute puppy', okay. Anyway, yeah I don't post there much.

One band with only one album is Mad Season. That album kicks me in the balls with every listen...heartbreaking and timeless. Thing was, in 1994, Layne was in deep in the addiction, but he could still wail like nobody else. The singing on Above is in most cases superior to the self-titled 3rd album.

Kamasi Washington’s FEARLESS MOVEMENT is an eclectic mix of jazz/hip-hop/rap/world music that is flat-out amazing and really defies definition. I suspect I’ll be getting this one on vinyl soon.

John Coltrane's lost album, BOTH DIRECTIONS AT ONCE, is excellent. There are quite a few alternate takes of several tracks and it's very cool to hear him work through the songs. I have Coltrane's IMPRESSIONS and OLÉ in route, which is going to give me a rather nice Coltrane vinyl collection.

For the foreseeable future I will not be using threads. I thought that maybe the place had gotten better over time, but I was wrong. I don't care for the drama, the ignorant randos spouting off bullshit, baiting for engagement. I'll be here, as usual, and my website, re-cranking up patreon soon.

Yesterday, Black Sabbath's SABOTAGE album turned 51 years old. It is my favorite Sabbath album. At turns both metal and prog, it is passionate, intense, and yet their most angry album. The band was going through the ringer with management and their frustrations and difficulties guide the lyrics.

Event in the Burlington, VT area (Williston) tomorrow, or Wednesday the 29th. Eric and I are driving up to talk books and drink maple syrup, and we’re all out of maple syrup.

Recorded in Berlin 1963, this album marks a shift in Coltrane that began his journey into improvisational avant-garde music.
