Terrible news from BBC: racial abuse of NHS staff is rising. 8,000+ incidents reported in 2024 – up 17% from 2023. True figure is probably higher. As nurse Tito Vicario put it: “We’re not punching bags, we’re still people.” NHS leaders need to act like that is true.

Great conference today from MEAM on systems change. We spoke about why racism persists: because individuals and systems practise avoidance, which breeds defensiveness and guilt. Anti-racism has to be embodied, long-term work – rooted in humanisation, not just policy statements.

When we say racism shapes norms, this is what we mean: analysis of women’s football commentary shows Black players are routinely described as “naturally” physical or emotional, while White players are framed as intelligent, composed and tactical.
