Software developer and creative dabbler sharing what I learn along the way. I write and make videos about programming. I spend a lot thinking about TypeScript, Rust, Ruby, and the web! No AI. https://brettcodes.com

If there's one thing I know devs love, it's being "fed" requirements! Prototyping & learning by iteration existed before AI and still exists without it. Wireframing, pen & paper, or even writing the front-end mock UI in code by hand. That way is much more collaborative & results in better software.

Different perspectives: some expert programmers feel that LLM pull them away from their craft. Architect/product managers like me who usually manage or feed programmers with requirements & specifications, and don't code much, are ecstatic at their new-found power to prototype and learn by iteration.

my vid & blog post about stopping using AI for coding has gone viral; the response has largely been reaffirming and supportive, which means a lot! and I'm in a much better headspace and enjoying coding and my work

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

I'm done using AI

Why I'm stopping using AI for coding (and anything else) after using it earnestly for a year and coming to understand the harms it causes on personal, societal, and environmental levels.
