As others have noted, Cyril is probably a literal child but this opinion is far too common among the Letterboxd and r/movies crowds. It’s stupid and small to think filmmakers of different generations are always in competition with each other. In conversation? Sure. But competition? Don’t be dumb.

I'm seeing a lot of SUPERHERO MOVIES ARE BACK posts in the wake of #BrandNewDay's success. Spider-Man movies were breaking box office records well before the MCU existed. They are a cinema phenomenon onto themselves, because Spider-Man is a singularly resonant and relatable character.

Related to everything Matt writes here, Spider-Man 2 is remarkable because it makes Peter and Mary Jane's relationship the main story, while Spidey's conflict with Doc Ock is a secondary concern. There's not another comic-book movie that centers a recognizable human relationship this strongly.
