The fountain at Ponet and my lovely Colnago CX-1. It's a dream to ride, especially after months on heavier gravel bikes and e-bikes.

Thre picturesque Catholic church at Ponet, just metres away from the Protestant 'temple'. After the wars of religion, the two sects seemed to get on just fine in the Diois, cheek by jowl.

The geological orientation board which, er, points at the wrong feature.

The road into Die, with the burnt forest of Justin looking sorry for itself. It'll all change even more dramatically in the next couple of years as we see what's actually died and what's just decided to close down for a while. Spring will give the first indications.

The little climb up to Salières... out of necessity (but also medical advice) my climbing is still very very slow... "Don't push, don't push!!". At least there are beautiful scenes to look at while going slowly.

Ten years ago I did 2478 miles in six weeks on my Colnago road bike; this year, in five weeks, I've done just ten. OK, so I've done quite a few on the e-bike, but nothing matches the fun of a good road bike on good roads. unanglaisendiois.blogspot.com/2026/08/look... #france #cycling #photography

A delight to have had a fruit tree pruning masterclass from a proper horticulturist-gardener. My greengage and cherry trees are now not only better shapes, but my faulty pruning techniques have been corrected! And I've even dug the hole ready for planting an apple tree root at Christmas 😀

Hoe dug for the last tree I'll plant in my French garden: an apple tree root for harvest in October/November... exact variety TBC at Christmas.

The (Protestant) temple in Pont de Quart, so named as it was four miles from the Roman government centre at Die (itself named after 'Augustus the God' (deus)

At le Collet between Menglon & Luzerand, the (not very) high point on the ride.

The famous collection of fountain, restaurant and church at Luc-en-Diois, the original government centre of the region, before that moved to Die.

If you're ever in Luc, go to the bakery. Like the one in Châtillon, it's as traditional as it comes, even if it does also sell 'sandwichs' these days.

If you're ever in the area of Die (26150) in south-east France, do make the effort to go to col de Rousset. It's simply stunning, and the chairlifts running in the summer make it very accessible. More photos in the (free) blog unanglaisendiois.blogspot.com/2026/08/col-... #france #photography

A sad photo to see of where the Massif de Justin (Die 26150) was at its worst around Montmaur-en-Diois. You can see how the fire encircled the old village on its hilltop, and the forest track I cycled up through the pines with friends last summer. Part of the 4200 hectares ravaged.

The Moustache Samedi-27 e-bike. Bought new Easter 2025, after my leaky mitral valve diagnosis, so I could keep fit before and after surgery (April 2026). It's been a real boon, and though it will never match the thrill of a lightweight road bike on smooth tarmac, it's still a great bit of kit.
