I'm trying to remember a small independent bookshop I visited somewhere in (I think) southern England. It was tiny and had a board over a closed staircase going down in the middle of the shop. Interesting fiction recommendations were displayed on that board. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

It’s heartening to see how much bigger @writersandartists.bsky.social has got since 2001, when I first picked up a copy at the start of my editing career. I’m also wondering if anyone might still own a 2002 or 3 edition and could look up an entry for me?

Sorry, what? Only 11% of people arrange their books by author, and around half don’t even put them in any kind of order?! I need to start a bookcase rescue service. (Yes, I am focusing on that as a distraction from all the other numbers in this article, I need to write more bookshop blogs.)

The sky is teasing me. It looks like it should rain, the wonderfully cool breeze feels like it should rain, but I’ve been here time and again this last month or more so I can’t believe it actually will rain.

Here we are again. The first half has been excellent. I still can’t believe we’re in the Royal Albert Hall for under a tenner.

We’re prommers! I know it’s standing, but so far the experience feels a lot more civilised than up where the heat rises.

We have our first borlotti bean flower! And several buds further down the stem. I’ve no idea of the timeframe for these so it’s a surprise and a relief to see something is happening.

Last year we finally admitted defeat and gave up chopping back the brambles at the bottom of our garden. Today we have been rewarded 😊

This was mesmerisingly weird and soothing at the same time. I recommend it.

There are the memories of 27 different bookshop visits lurking in my phone for me to write up. I'm both pleased to see so many and disappointed it's only 27. What have I been doing with my time these last few years?
