Despite its massive fame as the "northern tip of Britain," John o’ Groats isn't actually the most northerly point of the British mainland.  That title belongs to Dunnet Head which sits about 11 miles to the west and reaches roughly 2.35 miles further north. Images taken in February 2026.

Taken on a particular cold day, interesting fact about John o’ Groats is that its name comes from a Dutchman—not a Scot. Dutch ferryman named Jan de Groot (whose name was later anglicised to John o’ Groat) was granted land to operate a ferry between the Scottish mainland and the Orkney Islands.
