The way the history of pop was warped by boomer criticism/historiography into a hard dividing line between a supposed glop past and Elvis-and-everything-after with a rock focus was a massive reductive mistake that is still playing out.

I find it so annoying when improv-with-a-capital-I albums list personnel in alphabetical order. It's such a transparent and corny pose. "Everybody's equal here, brother." Fuck that noise. Horns, guitars*, keyboards*, bass*, drums/percussion. That's the order. *assuming there are any

I love how the press release about this event said they were both Chicago natives. Yes, Patti Smith was born in Chicago, but her family moved away when she was, like, four, and I've met her. She is about as Jersey as it's possible for a person to be. Don't let Chicago claim her!

TIL I learned something weird and hilarious: Billy Idol's first three albums are labeled like they're all one thing! Behold! Billy Idol (1982): Side 1 and Side 2. Rebel Yell (1983): Side 3 and Side 4. Whiplash Smile (1986): Side 5 and Side 6. (This does not continue on 1990's Charmed Life.)
