CADAAD 2026 keynote speaker: title and abstract Dichotomies and synthesis in Critical Discourse Studies (in conversation with Laura Filardo-Llamas) Charlotte Taylor (University of Sussex) Encarnación Hidalgo-Tenorio (Universidad de Granada) Dimitris Serafis (Groningen University) “Almost forty years after the emergence of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and two decades after the first Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD) conference, Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) continues to evolve in response to changing social realities, theoretical developments and methodological innovations. This roundtable offers an opportunity to reflect on some of the key tensions, challenges and opportunities that currently shape the field and, in doing so, to consider how CDS can continue to respond to an increasingly complex communicative landscape. At the heart of these reflections lies a series of old dichotomies that continue to inform both research and debate within CDS. One concerns the very nature of the field itself: whether CDS is best understood as a theoretical framework, an analytical approach, a methodology or some combination of these. This question is closely linked to broader discussions about the continuing relevance of established CDA traditions for analysing contemporary forms of communication and the need to move beyond predominantly Western and European perspectives in order to engage more fully with diverse epistemologies and social realities. These conceptual concerns are inseparable from methodological debates surrounding the relationship between qualitative and quantitative approaches. [...]”“[...] The growing use of corpus-assisted and computational methods has renewed discussions about methodological rigour, interpretation, researcher bias and triangulation, which raises questions about how critical discourse research can balance empirical robustness with contextual sensitivity and critical insight. Underlying both theoretical and methodological discussions is the persistent tension between positionality and objectivity. Questions of researcher responsibility, the study of vulnerable communities, the ethics of analysing harmful discourses and the place of activism within scholarship continue to challenge the field. At stake is not only how power is examined through discourse, but also how critical research may itself reproduce, negotiate or contest existing power relations while remaining reflexive about its own assumptions and limitations. These issues become particularly pressing in light of wider social and academic transformations. The need to engage with audiences beyond academia, the challenges posed by the marketisation and colonisation of higher education, and the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence all open up important debates concerning the future role of CDS. Rather than seeking definitive answers, this roundtable aims to encourage dialogue on how the field can continue to address emerging forms of inequality, power and social change while remaining responsive to the evolving conditions of contemporary communication.”
